Death of a Salesman-Who is Willy Loman

As we start our study of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman there are questions we need to consider.

Who is Willy Loman and why should we care about what happens to him. This link is a good place to start.

Salesman’ Willy Loman: A Towering Little Man

Once you’ve listened to this write a reaction to anything you heard? Do you see Willy anywhere. Think about this quote:

“A salesman does have to dream. … Because you have to see something that isn’t there, and you have to make it happen. … You have to have the ability to believe in yourself enough to go out there and make it happen.”

Gregory Hamilton

Does this mean that you’ll have to learn how to be a salesman? Is this the future you see for yourself?

While listening to this piece, Willy Loman sounds like an angry man that is always upset. He is like a courageous person and he imagines things a lot. He sounds like a guy that sounds clueless at times. I don’t understand him and but I kind of see him as a crazy man. The movie we saw this morning in class, is kind of related to the piece I heard. The little boy is kind of like Willy Loman.

From what I heard Willy Loman sounds like a man that would imagine things alot. He also sounds like a man that would get very angry when you tried to talk to him. He’s a man that sounds very crazy. He’s not the kind of person that you would want to mess with and have an attitude with. I think that he is the kind of person that has mental problems. He is alot like the little boy in the movie that we watched in class.

Great observation Micki-The boy and Willy do share a dissatisfaction with the real world. The boy finds school boring. Why does Willy need such a tortuous inner life?

Willy Loman seems like someone who is very dissatisfied with his life, so he imagines things being better for himself. I think he imagines things so much, that he often starts believing them himself. This is probably why Willy is always contradicting himself, saying one thing and then disagreeing with himself.

I think that Willy Loman is a very difficult man to try and figure out. He’s not exactly sure what he wants and contradicts himself alot. As I listened to the to this peice it kind of made him seem like a crazy man. But, I think that he isn’t as cazy as it made him seem, maybe there’s more to him than what he shows on the outside. He imagines more of what he can be, than what he is.

I think Willy Loman is a confused and misunderstood man. He’s upset for the fact that he doesn’t know what to do with his life. He doesn’t know what his next move should be. He’s not happy with his life what so ever. He doesn’t really know how to have confidence in himself. He’s constantly feeling as though he isn’t worth anything and what ever he does is not good enough. I don’t think Willy is crazy at all. He just needs a little guidance.

I think Willy Loman is a confused and difficult man. He is mad and upset for things that he can change but does not seem to want to change. It seems like he can not even predict his next move and is going crazy because of it. I think that he is crazy. Confidence in Willy Loman just seems not to exist. His business is also doing badly and what ever he does it does not seem good enough in his own perspective.

Willy Loman is a confusing charater who is trying to do the same job he has been doing since his younger days. He doesn’t want to retire from work because then he won’t have any money to pay for his rent. He is also worried about losing his dignity. Wherever Willy is, he tries to relate to the people around him. I think he is trying to make a connection so that he can sell them something. I wonder why Willy only seems to have his job that means anything to him. His job is like his family. His customers are important to him and Willy tries to earn their trust so they will buy something and keep him numbers up.
I don’t know what Willy is really trying to do. I don’t think he knows how to be normal.

Willy Loman is a interesting character and sometimes out of his mind. But that is why he is such a good salesmen. You have to believe in your self to sell or else nobody would ever buy from you. I could see my self being a sales men because i am a people person and i think well on my feet. I am also very good at persuading people and that is another quality of a salesmen.

I think that Willy Loman is a confused but skilled man. At over 60 years old he can still do lots of work with his hands and with tools. I don’t think that i can be a sales man because all the driving around and selling would tire me out and i would get to frustrated.

Willy Loman is man who is trying to make himself in this world and he is trying as hard as he can. Unfortunately Willy is getting tired and can no longer be a salesman because he is getting to old and he is losing his mind. We should care about Willy because he is doing everything that he can to provide for his kids and his family but no one treats him with respect. Willy Loman is unable to help himself because no one is willing to help him.

Willie Loman is a confusing character. He is also very lost. He has almost lost his way. He wants to keep a job he has had for almost thirty to forty years. He wants his morals and pride back. Willie is proud to be a salesman. He is proud to be a man and a father, but he is angry at himself. He is angry he is being treated like an outcast. His boss criticizes him and treats him like dirt although he is much older than him and Willie knew his father. In conclusion Willie is a good guy and strong character.

Willy Lowman is a very confused character and he is very proud person, he doesn’t really want any one’s help but at the same time he asks his brother-in-law for money. Willy isn’t really sure what he should do, but he tries to get his sons to become better that what he is, and he doesn’t want them to end up like him he wants them to be successful. The quote is true because you have to believe in yourself in order to sell what you need to sell and you need to see that goal and you need to make it happen. Though I don’t see Willy anywhere we all have a Willy in us, some more that others, but still he is one of those characters who can have an impact on and in our lives. I don’t think that I could ever be a salesman but I do think that you would have to learn how to be one because you have to know how to behave and what to do to land a sale, and I think that that would take some learning and practice, but I don’t think that I could be a salesman.

Willy Lowman seems like a man who does not like his life. He dislikes his life so much that he makes up a new one in his mind, and brings himself back to his past. He is very dissatisfied with the life that he has made for himself. He does not think certain things are good enough for him and that he has to imagine doing things with his hands. Everything he imagines always has to do with him using his hands, which he cannot do in really life, so he makes it up in his head. While listening to this I noticed that Willy Lowman sounds like a very confused and angry man. He really needs to understand what is real and what is imaginary. I believe that he probably has something mentally wrong with him, or that something happened to him in his past that affects his life and his hands.

I think that Willy Loman has good intentions, but isn’t capable of them. He means well and wants the best for his family, but he lost his job, so he can’t provide for them. Willy Loman becomes delusional as he gets older and when things in his life go wrong. Willy wants his sons to be successful, and not end up like himself, but that doesn’t happen.

Willy Loman is a confused character, he seems li ke he doesn’t really know what he wants in life. He sometimes seems dissatisfied with the life he has. He is caught between his inner and outer life. Willy seems to contradict himself alot, and seems pretty crazy. He is a good man and wants the best for his family. He tends to look back on the past often and seems pretty mental.

I think Willy loman is an old grumpy man, just like most of them and is confused with what his purpose in life is. He does not like how he ended up and wants his sons to become better and harder workers so they can turn out better than he did. Willy is a good guy but he is confused about everything and needs to get his prioritys straight. I think he is a good character and is just confused because no one is treating him with a lot of respect, when they should because he is older and is doing a fine job taking care of his family.

I think that Willy Loman is a man who wishes that we has as successful as he says he is. He claims that he is well known and he is a good salesman when he is not a good salesman at all. He is bent on thinking that he was born to be a salesman but he is awful at it. William Loman is your average joe, but with one problem he does not value his life enough to stay alive. For lack of a better word Willy is confused i gess being a salesman is his dream but he isn’t any good at it, but he thinks he is a good salesman. thats why i think Willy is confused.

I think that Willy Loman is a crazy grumpy old man. He sounds like he really wants to be successful but he is not. He likes to imagine things and think that they are real but he can not face the truth that the are not . The only reason he does it is to better himself. Willy is just like any average person. Even though he is confused everyone is a little bit confused. Everyone wants something and everyone dreams of having something. Even if you say you have it all you want something. I think that I have everything to satisfy my life right now but there are still things I want that I cant have just yet but they will eventually come to me.

I think that Willy Loman is a man that is in his own world and is trapped. He needs help and it is all around him, he just can’t seem to figure out how to use it. He wants to be successful and provide for his family. And when he doesn’t he’s embarressed. That’s why he tells his son’s, “You don’t want a job like mine.” He wants them to be more successful than he is. Sales is a tough job. Very stressful because when you do good they encourage you to do better and when you do bad they are all over you. It’s very stressful and you must do very well to keep your job. Not everyone can be a salesman. It’s very difficult and requires someone who can handle a lot. I don’t see myself going into this field because I wouldn’t be able to handle the stress. There’s too much pressure and you must sell. And I don’t think I could do that.

I think that Willy Lowman is a man with a heart of gold to say the least about him. There are some things that stick out about him that make people wonder though. Such as, the fact that he talks to himself every-now and again, also, the big fact that he tries to kill himself. Even though he seems like a very stable man, you can tell that some thing is not right with this man. He seems like that he has some problems that went on in the past that he just can’t see to get over fast enough. So basically what I’m trying to say is everything is alright on the outside but on the inside he’s emotionally and mentally unstable

Diana Leyva wrote @ May 30th, 2008 at 9:55 am

To me Willy Loman is some what a coward and he doesn’t like himself i also think that he is sort of obnoxious, I mean he did try to kill himself a few times, and at the last minute of the book he succeeded. I think he was too afraid of life. Like when Willy would lie just to make himself feel better and his children learned that from him. When he kind of think he’s like top dog, when i don’t really think he is so great. I personally think that Willy made the stupidest choice of all…to kill himself. But overall I really liked the book and the characters.

Willy Loman is like a child in my eyes. Sometimes he knows what he wants but he will not say it flat out. He would like to work with his hands but instead of pursuing that dream Willy sticks with a job he does not care for. He tends to contradict himself a lot which is a child- like characteristic. He can’t make up his mind. Although over all Willy seems like he is the type of person that just wants to care for his family and help support them. We should care about Willy the same way he cares about his family.

   Skippy wrote @ June 5th, 2008 at 6:33 am

I see Miller using the character Willy Loman as a symbol of what the American dream is pushing people to be. In this case Willy is obviously affected in some way by his work and the lack of money that his job produces. Willy eventually goes crazy and the stress and the pressure ultimately push him to his tragic death. We should care about Willy Loman because if we only follow what our counselors and authority tell us, we would become what Willy Loman has become. That sometimes the best job for us may no be the one that brings in the most income, but one that will keep you happy and ultimately keep you around for your family. Willy Loman is a confused man who has the American dream imbedded into his head, which is, get married, get a job, make money and work till you die because you can never have too much money.
