Death of a Salesman is about work. Work that allows us to get what we want. Work that defines who we are.
Go to the StoryCorps website and listen to 2 stories about work. Next write a reaction to what you heard and discuss what you think about work. How do you see work? What kind of work do you see yourself doing and why?
Finally, talk to 2 people you know who have or had full time jobs. Ask them about what they did. How they got into that line of work and how they see themselves. Keep that information for a future assignment.

The first story that I listen to was sad. It was a about a little boy interviewing his mother. The mom talked about how hard her mom work to make sure she was taken care of. And also to show how much she cared about her. The saddest part was when she was talking about how her ex husband was abusive to her and her two sons. And the boy interviewing his mom said “that if he could be anything in the world, he would be a better man than his father”. I was amazed at how at only 11 years old he was willing to take the responsibility of being a better man than his father. As I was listening to another story I learned that work isn’t all fun and games. A lot people work so they can support their family. So their kids can have stuff to eat everyday. People are working in harsh conditions. As one men described he would have maggots all over his clothes and in his shoes because he was a garbage men. People didn’t look at garbage men as a job. People didn’t respect the work that they did every single day. There were people dying and being injured because of handling the garbage truck. All they asked for was to be treated as men and be respected for the job they do. I see work as something you have to do in order to survive. You need money for everything. You’re not given clothes and food for free. You have to work for it. If you have no money then it’s going to be hard for you to survive. I see myself working in the business industry. This is something I enjoy. I like to be able to own my own business and manage people. I like helping people more than anything but you make absolutely no money for the work that you do. I’m not just looking for a job to see how much money it pays I just want to be comfortable and stable.
The first one that I listened to was kind of boring. It was about a guy who was tunning this piano at a nursing home and he didn’t relize that they had concerts that day. The second one that I listened to was very interesting. It was about this lady who was interviewing her friend who was a doorman at the plaza hotel. He said that he likes standing outside the doors and make people happy. I think that work is sometimes fun and sometimes boring. It all depends on what kind of job you have. I see work as getting money to spend at stores, and to go to places. I see myself working at some kind of store putting stuff on the shelves. I see myself doing this kind of job because it’s pretty much the only kind of job that I can get and it’s the easiest job that I can get.
The first story was about someone who collected thing; he worked to collect things and has over a million things in his apartments. He has a passion for collecting things and finding new things, but he says that the mean nothing to him that if they were all gone he wouldn’t care because he may not have the physical but he has what he learned from them. The second story was about a man who discovered that he was a master artist while in jail and once he found this he was drawing every day till he was reliced, and once out he want to art school. So both stories show how the men worked at something they are passionate about something and worked hard to get where they are. I can see myself in the technology or sciences field because I love both and I can see myself in this field because they are both so interesting and I love them both.
The first story was about a man who collected everything he could find and kept it in his apartment. He really worked at finding items to collect. He claimed that there was no value to them, yet he continued gathering objects. Collecting was the work for Harley and he seemed to enjoy it, but I thought it was a little strange. In the second story, a guy was in prison and he found that he liked to draw and paint. Before he went to prison, he did not know that he had this talent. Painting became like his work as he took interest in it and improved his skills in it. To me work is something that you are interested in as well as becoming trained in the skills that are needed.
Training is important to do work well. I see work as a necessary part of life. By working, you earn a living which allows you to have a future. I see myself working in the counseling field. Helping others is the right thing to do. There are so many needy kids out there that need a mentor or guidance counselor. I would like to be able to help them.
The first story that I listened to was about the garbage men that wanted to be treated by men. I believe that they should have been treated better and that their working conditions should have been better for them. I am shocked by how they told that two of their fellow workers were killed in a compacter and how dangerous their jobs were and how dirty they were. So all they wanted was to just be treated like men and I believe that it was the right thing for them to do.
The second story I listened to was about the DJ who was in his studio when Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. I was just horrified at how he wasn’t able to leave for 24-hours after because there were tanks and riots all over the city and I can’t even imagine how he must have felt about someone who was just trying to get equality for his people was just gunned down. I believe that he acted right by staying in his office and doing his job even though the circumstances were so dangerous at the time.
I like to work because it gets me money to do things that I like to do. So I see work as something the has to be done so I can have fun. The work that I would like to do is aerospace engineering because I think that would be something that would be interesting and fun. Also I what to do that because then I would be designing something new and hopefully it would be build and actually work. That’s what I would like to do.
Nice work. Brit I particularly liked your piece.
Do you think that every job deserves respect. That work itself, not what a person does rather that she does something, raises a person.
Is there nobility in work?
The first story I listened to was about a man in the 1960s who worked for a sanitation company. He described all the horrible things that he had to do like, when he used to lift up the garbage bags things would leak all over him and he wouldn’t be able to drop it because if he did he would get fired. It was a sad story because even though he new this job is the worst possible job he still had to work because he had a family to care for and he didn’t want to let them suffer for something that he didn’t do.
The second story i listened to was about an artist in New York. While he was in jail he started to paint and draw. In prison he realized that this was for him and this is what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. After 66 months in prison and drawing he walked out and applied for art school. He gathered all of his finest arts and brought them to the interview and when he got home he received a letter from the school for a full scholarship. He said every morning before school he would see his friends on the same corner and they would ask the same question every day “D where you goin man?” and he would answer “to School”. He said that he felt like there lives where just going to waist and this motivated to stay in school and after those 66 months in jail he has not returned.
I like to work because instead of asking my mom for money I can have my own and spend it on what I like. No one likes to work it’s just something that you have to do if you want to buy and do your own things. I want to be a mechanic when I get older. The engine in a car is the most fascinating things I ever seen. It’s interesting to what all the gears and belts in motion. I also love the feeling of accomplishing something, like if I was to do some ones brakes I would love to say “yeah I did that.”
The first one i listened to was about a very very young boy who worked at the grocery store because his dad wanted him to do work. He worked at young age and so did I. My first job was mowing my own and my neighbors lawn. I got paid 20$ for both and i always loved getting the money. I see work as something you can either love or hate but you will always get $ for your time.
The first story that I have read was about this lady who was divorced with four kids. Her first job was a laundry person and she asks some ladies that came in with a $600 pay check and ask them where they worked. They told her where the place was and she went to apply there. She applied in a shipyard and had two choices to choose from and she chose to be a welder because it paid more. She has to work in the winter time and the way the work is laying there backs in a steel ship. After her work closed down, she had to find two jobs to support her family. I think that it was good for her to find two jobs to support her family and I give her props for working hard for her children.
The second story was about this garbage man. There days were awful, the clothes they wear would have maggots all over it and on there bodies. They had to work in rainy weathers and if they didn’t then they would get fired. I feel really bad because they work hard for what they need and get treated bad for it. It’s unfair to see how they are treated everyday when they want to be treated like men.

The first one i listened to was about a young lady who worked all 4 years in high school and had enough money over those years to pay for college . She has been working for 30 years after having her first job. She has never missed any days in 16 years. The second one i listened to was pretty funny. This guys work was collecting over 1million objects like string, menus, cards, and lots of other neat stuff. This guy had a different form of work he didn’t get payed for but it made him happy and keep him busy. I see work as a chance to make money and provide a service for people. I could see myself working with my brother this summer at little ceazars.
Okay. So the first story i listened to was really sad, but at the same time it reminded me of my mother. Besides the whole abusive part, my mom is a single mom and she has been for about my whole life. She has taken care of me and comforted me when I needed it . I think that no matter what job a person does, they still should be respected for it. If you meet somebody and you ask them what there job is and they say they work for McDonalds your going to immediately form an opinion of them. Did you ever stop and think that maybe that person works there because they want to? That maybe that person has a doctor’s degree but just chooses to work at McDonalds. Did you every stop and think that the people that work at McDonalds have to deal with the same problems you have tp and more and that if it wants for them working there that you wouldn’t be able to stop by on your lunch break and get a Big Mac meal with a diet coke, did you ever think that they have been there for at least 8 hours and have had over 100 people come through there line and that maybe it just slipped there mind about your ketchup. I say that no matter what the job is you should still be respected for it because if that person didn’t do there job you wouldn’t get your service. I think that I could see my self working in the law career for the simple that I like to voice my opinion and I like to be heard.
I asked my Grandfather and my Grandmother because my grandfather retired from General Motors and my grandmother still works they both said that the reason they went into that line of work is because that’s when it was way back then and blacks weren’t really doing the whole “college” thing, and GM was paying really good money and they had a family to take care of.
The first story I listened to was really good. I enjoyed it. I thought that is really cool how the guy wanted to grow up and own the grocery store that the mans dad took them when he was just old enough to walk. He said that everything was good in that store from the pastries to the meat. The story reminded me of my granddad and I when he used to take me into Supervalue a local grocery store in St. Louis. I would always want to run around and stay in the store. Everyone was so nice there. Now when I go back there is still the same old cash register that I remember. Then Second Job interview I watched was the story about the bounty hunter. He said that he had so much fun doing it. I thought it was funny when he said that if the convicts new that we were coming for them that they would just lock there self up in jail. The man said he had this guy that he had to chase down caught him and broke his jaw and told him to answer questions. If didn’t answer then he ripped out the mans teeth. That was his last mission and he retired after that because he said that is close he wants to get to death. I thought that he must have been really dedicated to his work. My favorite interview I listned to was the baseball introducer. That guy must have had a blast doing that job. He announced Mickey Mantel. I think that work should be something that you enjoy. I don’t think you should ever do anything you don’t want to do. When I get older I want to teach. I know it will be hard but I think I can do it. If I can’t teach I will have to find another profession. I was thinking about joining the Marines. If I can not do anything I want to do I need to go to my next best option and I think that is my best next option.
The first interview I listened to was a cab driver talking to his friend. He said that he goes to work happy, and comes home happy. He also says that he likes his job so much that he doesn’t want to charge his customers. As his own boss, he says that he makes a good living. The second interview I listened to was a veteran dance host on cruise ships. He told about how he would dance for 6-8 hours per day with single women. He said that he would be so touched by how ecstatic the women who he asked to dance would be, because they hadn’t danced for years.
I view work as an opportunity for people to live out the “American Dream”. If you find the right job for you, you can make a living while enjoying your job. I think that if you enjoy your job, you pretty much have it made because you’re making money while having a good time. Currently, I teach swim lessons, and I like it. I make good money, so I’m satisfied for now. In the future, I can see myself in the medical field or as a paraprofessional. I would like to have one of those jobs because I love to help people, and the people I know who have those jobs enjoy it.
The first one I listened to was about a door man at the Plaza Hotel. He sounded that he enjoyed his job and was basically placed in this job for the rest of his life. Once he finished high school he started working there and he continues to work to this day. He got a 150 dollar tip around Christmas time and he is willing to do anything for a guest. He even shined someones shoes because there were no places open to shine them. He loves his job and continues to do it. The second story is about a woman who wanted to work at Ford Motor Company. She wanted to work their just for the money. She saw that the money was good and that she would be willing to work under any circumstances. When she got the job she was treated very poorly but she continued to do it only because the money was good. In life I am not real sure what I want to do. I want to do something though that I will enjoy and be happy with. Some people work just for the money. I think that is wrong and you should only do want you really want to do. The money shouldn’t be a concern.
The first story I heard was about a black man who worked everyday just because he did not have any other choice because that’s how he fed his family. When they had to take out the garbage all the garbage and bugs would fall out of the tubs on top of him because they all had wholes in them. He was not treated with respect at all and the only thing that kept him going was his family. He wanted decency and they wanted to be treated like men and that’s all. 1300 workers decided they were not going to take the treatment anymore and decided to stand in the street and say that they were men. The second story I read was about a boy who was interviewing his mommy. The mom had an ex husband who was abusive to her and her kids. It was so sad I can’t imagine how hard that was for them. Her mom worked very hard just so she would be taken care of like she should be. I see work as something that everyone will and needs to do. No one wants to work but its something that helps you achieve your goals and it will make you feel accomplished in life. If you plan on having a nice life you most definitely need to work extra hard at everything you do. I see myself working with people and doing paperwork and lots of talking. For some reason ever since a few years ago I have always wanted to work at a big desk and have a lot of responsibility. I still am not sure what my career will exactly be, but it will be something important. :]]]
Do you think that every job deserves respect?
Yes i feel that every job deserves respect. Every little thing that people do contributes to helping something. Just by picking a piece of paper off the ground your helping the community. You have to give people the respect for what they do regardless of how little the job may be. If we didn’t have garbage men where would all the trash go? Alot of people look at garbage men and say “oh there not really doing nothing but picking up garbage” . And it’s comments like that that make people feel unappreciated because people aren’t looking beyond what they see that person is doing to help our communities. Now I see why people are so ready to get out of work when 5 o’clock hits. What’s the point of being happy at something you do when your not going to be given the credit you deserve?
Work can be something that defines a person. Some people choose a career just for the title. To maybe show off at a class reunion, to show that, that person made something of themselves. Those people who boast about the jobs they have are the people that let their jobs define them. The people who work for the fun of their job and go into that career because they like it are people who do not let their jobs define them. They are not the people who are controlled by their jobs. When I’m older I want to be an anesthesiologist. Not because anesthesiologists make a ton of money but because of the power they hold over a person, the power to have life or death in your hands. When I am older I will not be defined as an anesthesiologist but as a successful woman who made something out of her life. I will not let my job define and control my life style. Right now I am working as a waitress. Being a waitress is about the only thing a teenage kid can do, but being a waitress does not define me. I like my job, it is fast money, it’s not boring, and I meet a lot of interesting people.
The first story I heard was very moving, because this man was in prison for about 2 and a half years and he wanted to become an artist. No one thought he could do it even though he was very talented even a guard told him before he got out of prison that he would be back. He succeeded in what he did best. He didn’t go back to prison he focused on his painting career and he went to a fine arts school and no one understood why he was in the class, he was the only African American in the class. The man states that it didn’t stop him from trying to achieve his goals. The next man I listened to was very odd to me because for one he likes to exterminate bugs, and I hate bugs. The man thought that roaches were spectacular. He got into the line of work because he wasn’t working at the time and a family member was retiring so he took over the business. I see works as something everyone needs or wants. Most of the time people only work because they want money, others are different like people who work at hospitals they work to make people feel better and there helping people. I personally see myself working in the nursing field because I really want to help ill people get better. I’ve seen a lot of nurses at a young age form my brother, to me my mom and it would make me feel good to know that I helped someone.
The first story I listened to was, Andy Linares with his occupation being pest control, I was surprised that he had not trained, but he loved to do it and continued it which I think is awesome to have a job you love to do.
The second article I listened to Petros and Nikos Spanakos, twin brothers who were both professional boxers. They both love what they do and loved it for a long time since they were kids. To be a professional anything is just outstanding the determination and dedication to prevail out on top especially with your brother would just be the best and that’s exactly what they both did.
When I think of the word work I believe you must enjoy what you are doing or it will tear you apart. I see myself doing something I really like, which is photography, any kind of work that you show whom you really are. It should not change your appearance by the way others look at you. You should never let your job define you people should know you for you not as a photography which is what i want to portray when I am older. Which is the reason you should not work for the money but for your heart.

I listened to a story of a man who seemed to work in a crop fields. He carried dirty laundry with maggots on his head or shoulder, with the maggots falling down his shirt all the way to his shoes. He describes how he suffers and goes through all the pain . And having all the work on his shoulders, until one day he stood up from himself and stopped the painful, backbreaking torture. In another story of a man that went to prison, he started to do art work. When he left the guard at the door told him he’d be back. I respect this man so much, especially when he received his full time scholarship. I bet it felt good to see his old friends who he used to hang out with, sitting on the same corner day after day, as he goes to college. If I had to chose the type of job, it would have to be something that I like , and I shouldn’t have to break my back and feel like I m going through a daily grind.

For example, I currently am working at a counrty club bussing tables. I do a lot of side work , also a lot of little things for the waiters and cooks. I could like my job more, but i get tired of the little things and i think i could hold a harder job that bussing and stocking.
The first story I listened to was Tia Smallwood and her struggle in trying to find work in a so called mans job. When she had gotten far into her college classes she had a teacher who was a chauvinistic man. He told her that no other women had every made it this far in any of these classes. She was looked down upon from day one. But she didn’t let that get to her. She eventually graduated from college but her journey was not over yet. She went to at least 80 different job interviews that she knew she was good enough for. But the common theme was that she got turned down and she honestly believed it was because she was a women. Tia Smallwood had to over come her adversity to even get the chance to work and provide for herself. The world tells us to work but doesn’t give us the oppertunities to work. That is why we must make those oppertunities for ourselves and make something out of nothing if we really want to survive.
The second story i listened to was Ed Trinka. Ed Trinka to me embodies what i believe what all work should be. Being a door man at the Plaza hotel for almost 50 years does not sound exciting to most, but Ed Trinka is the kind of man who enjoys meeting new people and helping others. He told a story of a time when he shined someone’s shoes because the shop was not opened yet. It was not in his title of job, but he did it to help the guy out. He really shows that money does not make the worst job in the world great. But instead the love for a job makes the person great.
