Reading and Writing to Find Out Who We Are and What We Think

Twain’s Pudd’nhead Wilson and Race

In his novel Twain challenges us to think about what race really means. Tom and Chambers are switched, and then raised as members of different races. Roxy is one sixteenth black. Chambers is one thirty-second black. What does any of this mean?

I put the question to you. What is race, and how does it define you a person is? Respond in grammatically correct, complete sentences. Try using the chunking techniques we’ve been learning in class.

Race is what you are made of it is who you are. Race is your nationality and where you come from. In the book we are challenged to think and realize what race really means because Tom and Chambers are switched as young babies. Twain suggests that race is not just what you are but also where and by whom you are raised by. For example you could be a white person raised by black people would that make you black? Ill leave that up to you to decide.

Race is a way to classify the place where someone came from or their lifestyle. To some people, race is their pride because it is where they came from, it’s their story, their history. Races are also just ways to classify a style of living. In history there have always been times where one race dominated another race. Back then races were used for sick and wrongful purposes, but now they’re used to classify your way of life and where you came from. There will always be some people of races that think that they are better than another race, but those few people out of that race do not make up the entire race, but the few people that are racist against one race, give the race they dislike a reason to hate them back. Race used to decide weather you were privileged or poor. Race is perceived as a way to classify a style of living.

Race is a story, the history of where you come from and (normally) what you believe. However like many stories it can be edited with some deception of the ignorant. It doesn’t stick with us if we decide not to allow it to stick. Unfortunately when we decide to hide our race we loose our history and our story. Once this happens we loose ourselves in the process, causing a ripple effect that causes our lives to slowly implode on top of us. Take Michael Jackson for example he was black, then he abandoned his race and lost his story and his life went straight down the toilet. Race is a story, that without which we would not be who we are, or as happy as we could be.

Race is another way of saying who you are, and where you come from. It is something that everyone has and it will stay with you forever, no matter how hard you try to get rid of it. It is apart of what makes you, you. Just like in Pudd’nhead Wilson, Roxy was one- sixteenth black. The slave owner couldn’t take one- sixteenth of her, he had to take all of her. That is exactly like race; it stays with you forever, wherever you go. You can’t leave it home whe you are going out with your friends.

I think race defines a person, by how they walk talk, act, and how they see everything from their point of veiw. This has nothing to do with racism, it is just the plain idea of how I think race defines a person. No one should be afraid of their race, because we all have one, and nothing can change what we are inside.

Race is conformity trying to entertain itself wih some variation. It suceeds because it is easier to have an endowed identity, it requires little effort. With there being many different races, people get all the benefits of conformity with a false sence of individuality. It also serves to let people group you up and rule over you, like Roxy. Roxy had barely a drop of slave in her, but since she was by race- a slave, she inherited the family buisness due to this classification system that deals with names, not facts. Race deals only with names, when in reality a person is not determined by their ancestors. Race does not determine who a person is, but people have always tried to make others think that. Since believing something about yourself often makes it true, people have been looking at others of their race to find themselves, leading to mass conformance all over the world.

Race is what defines a person. It expresses what they have done throughout time. It can show how people act or how they live. Race can cause people to do things, things that other people might not do or look differently on. It changes a person’s lifestyle because they could do something that if they were not that race or not nationality they might not do. Twain looks at the fact that if two young babies are the switched at birth and one is white and the other is 1/32nd black how they would be raised differently because of race. This shows that race can influence how a person is raised just because of the lifestyle that the parents come from because they might not be able to give them everything that another person might be able to.

Race is what defines you. Race is also your nationality and plays a big role in your lifestyle. My family comes from Russia, Poland, and Canada. Where my family comes from defines who I am. In Pudd’n Head Wilson, Roxy is 1/16 black. Physically that does not make her black, but yet back then, she is still somewhat black so that makes her a slave. Mark Twain challenges us while we are reading this book because Tom and Chambers. The Real Chambers is 1/32 black, yet still considered a slave.

Race is what makes you an individual. You might take your race for granted, and take pride in where you came from, but that doesn’t me that it defines you as a person, as in how you act and associate with people. Just because you look one way doesn’t mean that you are going to act exactly the same as the other people of your race. I don’t think that being Filipino/American has anything to do with who I am as a person. Yes, I am proud of where I have come, but I don’t think that affects what my character traits are as a person. But then again, your race could influence who you are as a person, but it is really up to you to chose for yourself what you want to be perceived as, and who you want to become.

Race according to Dictionary.com is “A group of persons related by common descent or heredity.” Race is different to me though, race is what color you are where you live, and what religion you follow. Race to me is a way to classify people so that they can be differentiated. Race is a tool to group people, and it is not always a bad way to group them. Race really doesn’t define you, races can have stereotypes that some people think define a group, but those people are wrong.

Race is who you are and what your beliefs are. Many people sterotype people depending on what race you are. In the book “Puddi’nhead Wilson” the characters Tom and Chambers are switched as young babies, Roxy the mother is trying to prove that you cant sterotype someone just because their race. Everyone i believe is a little different from race to race, but that does not give people the right to be racist or sterotypical to another someone.

Race to me is your nationality it is who you are and what defines you. Race is your ethnicity. To me race is by whom you are raised. For example if a white boy was raised with a black family he would be treated like a black boy. Like in Pudd’n head Wilson Roxy is 1/16 black now days that wouldn’t matter she is more white than black but back then she is still black so therefor she was treated as a slave.

Race is your past, present, and future. Your past is your ancestors, your present is you now, and your future is your kids and their kids, etc. Race can define a person by what kind of friends they make, what job they pursue, or the type of man or woman they chose to date or marry. I ask my mom how would she define race and she said It would be like we are Caucasian, they are African American, and they are Indian. My mom also said it would be like classifying the different breeds of cats or dogs. But when you think about it I am not just a Caucasian American, I maybe mixed with English or Irish. So race is truly what you are made up of.

Steven Vondra wrote @ December 7th, 2008 at 5:36 pm

Race is how you are defined by a few people. People look at race and stereotype people on what race they are. Race is not a big deal in my eyes. People are all equal no matter what race. Chambers and Tom are switched as babies and don’t know that they were switched. This is sort of comfusing. Roxy’s son now pretty much owns his real mother. Tom thinks he is now a slave but it is backwards. Tom is a slave but is really not and chambers is free but is really a slave. The two boys will have all different times growing up and will have different personalities. They would have been a lot different if they had not been switched.

To some people around the world, race defines who you are. I do not think this to be true. I think that my actions define who I am. It is true that physical appearances will change between the races. For instance, if you are African American your skin tone will probably be black. This does not affect who your are as a person though. You can be whoever you want to be.

Tyler Koontz wrote @ December 7th, 2008 at 6:31 pm

Race can be defined many ways. It can be said that race is mostly defined when someone is either Caucasian, African American, and etc. When race defines a person it’s usually what their ethic background is, or who their ancestors are, and what kind of culture or religion they are.

   Kevin Cardenas-Valera wrote @ December 7th, 2008 at 6:49 pm

Race can mean lots of things. It can classify a human being or It also can say a lot of who we are. Race is how we are defined as a person or group. It’s like a story we carry with us no matter what. If some people ruin the thoughts of how others see their race, then everyone pertaining to that race would be affected by those same thoughts.

Race is not something you choose it’s something you’re born with. There’s a difference between ethnicity and race, you can change your beliefs, sense of identity, and culture. Race is something you have forever. I think race defines everyone as a conformist. You can’t change the color of your skin unless you’re Michael Jackson or have procedures done to do so.

Sami Bolton wrote @ December 8th, 2008 at 5:40 am

Race is something you do not choose, you are born what you are. Race defines me as a person becasue people get treated differently by what color skin they have. Peolple treat you differently by many things but race is a big one, just becaseu you look different they treat you different. just because I am white people may treat me differently, what you have to do is ignore them and all you have to be is who you are,

Shafer Johnson wrote @ December 8th, 2008 at 5:45 am

Race is up to you. If you want to hang with a certain group of kids then let that be. But race does not define who you are inside. The only thing race affects is your looks. But not you personality or how you act. Or even your profession that you choose when you grow up. So all in all race is simply an ilussion that many people are forced to abide by.

Travis Ketterer wrote @ December 8th, 2008 at 5:47 am

Race is all in your head. There is no such thing as race in the scientific world. So, it is all about what people see. It really shouldnt define a person, but it tells a person what they should act like, what they should talk like, and what they should dress like.

Alyssa Minton wrote @ December 8th, 2008 at 6:31 am

Some people think race can define who a person is but it doesnt define a person. It defines where you came from or where your ansesters came from, it defines your background history! It doesnt say who you are like personality wise.

David Chronowski wrote @ December 8th, 2008 at 11:59 am

Race is how you want people to percieve your story. Your story is your life up until the present, “tom” was born a slave but thought of as a white man. If Roxy wanted to eacape slavery she could of found some white people clothes, and ran away. Her story would not be that of a free white woman unless that is how she percieved herself.

   Taylor M wrote @ December 8th, 2008 at 12:09 pm

To me, race is what background a person comes from. Whether it is black, white, asain, or a combination of any of these and more. It defines us as people by how we live our lives whether through our different religions, beliefs, or how we spend time with our families.

Tony Harris wrote @ December 8th, 2008 at 3:25 pm

I believe that race and personality has nothing in common. I belive race is only the color of your skin for government can tell people apart, so they can know you. Personality is the way you are, the you act. What somebody learn when they learn and find about. Race and Personality has nothing in common.

Race is what you are born into. So if you are from Europe you are European and if you are from Asia your Asian. I would be considered European-American since I was born in Michigan but my family is from Europe. Everyone has a different type of race and you should be proud of it because it describes you.

Kiandra Pittman wrote @ December 8th, 2008 at 3:58 pm

What is Race? Race is what defines you as a person. It varies from Black, White, Japanese, Chinese and so on. When I think of race I think about my background of my history. My mother is half balck and white and my dad is all black. Growing up, I guess you could say, I was brought up the Black way. I was taught the Black lifestyle. I remember when I was little, and I didnt know it then but I do now, that this boy called me an ignorant black person. I never told my parents about this because I never thought it was that serious until I reached probably the 3rd grade.

Race to many people can be defined as so many diffrent things. Some might say that race just defines what color you are or where you came from. In my opinion Race makes up the many diffrent characteristics that make you who you are. Yes it defines what color or nationalty but it goes in so much deeper than that. It defines you as a person. Personally my race defines me as a proud African American, who is a very religous christian, Thats my race because it defines who the real Darian really is.

Katelyn Johnson wrote @ December 8th, 2008 at 7:10 pm

Race is what you are made of. It is your nationality and and what makes you who you are. Lots of races have different traditions and different lifestyles. Sometimes people base who you are just because of your race which isnt good, and it isnt fair. In the book of pudd’nhead wilson, even if you are one sixteenth black or one thirty-second black you are still a slave. As long as you have some amount of black in you, you had to be a slave. I dont think this it is fair that you have to be a slave based on your race. But that is how people did things back then. And that is what I think about race.

Daniel alnajjar wrote @ December 8th, 2008 at 7:36 pm

Race is typically thought of as how someone looks. It only defines people who want their race to define them. My race defines me because I want it to. Some people may want to run away from thief race because there is a burden put on them that they cannot live up to. On the other hand there is always people who fight for their race. Race is not an epidemic in this world, it Is an excuse for poor behavior.

Max Metzger wrote @ December 8th, 2008 at 8:23 pm

Race is more than a gene passed down. Race is where you come, from where your ancestors were born. There is a thing that people in America do, we racial profile. This means that for example a black person is suppossed to act all gangster and hoodish. Same goes for people who are asian, except with asians ther’yre supposed to be really smart.

Alicia Moyet wrote @ December 9th, 2008 at 12:45 pm

Race in some people’s opinion is who you are. I think race is what you are made of, but, you race does not make what kind of person you are. The definition of race is different to each person. To me race is my background, customs that have been passed down and what kind of language that my family speaks.

Jeremy Wood wrote @ December 9th, 2008 at 4:08 pm

To me, race is just what other people try to divide people into. Others may say that race is about the color of ones skin. Some people may say it is about whom one is raised by. If a white kid is raised by a black family one may say he is black. In Pudd’n Head Wilson, Roxy is something like 1/16 black but, back then she would be considered black and treated black. Even if she looks white.

Brandon Dunn wrote @ December 10th, 2008 at 5:57 am

Race to me shouldnt be a factor of life, it shouldnt determine how we live, how we act, and who we are. I believe we should just be one race, man-kind. We are all humans, the only factor between us is color, so why should that be the deciding one? If your blind you dont know what color you are, you just act how your personality is. If your blind your best friend could be black and you be white, and you would never know it. So why cant we all be blind to the color of our skin? Why are we so hung up on the color of our skin? i would like us all to be one race, but it is up to you to decide to be a single race as well.

Molly White wrote @ December 10th, 2008 at 6:38 am

Race defines who you are. Its where you come from and your backround. I am Polish, Irish, Czech, and German. Some people, because of there backrounds, have harder lives to live. I think depending on your race, makes you stronger. Like a black person had to deal with way more than a white person did. It makes them stronger. Mexicans have to go threw alot to leagally be an american. Your race is the only thing in you that will NEVER change. Be proud of who you are, and where you come from.

Race is a group of persons related by common descent or hereditary. Race defines the color of your skin and your family culture and background. What you do defines how people look at you and. Back when Jim Crow Laws were established black people were treated unfairly, just because they were black. Black people didn’t have a chance to show what they could do. But now that everyone is treated equally everyone has a chance to be whatever they want. It is up to them to do it.

Race is but a word. A word that has a purpose. A purpose that has shaken the world for many centuries. We fear and hate our brothers because of a slight difference in skin color. We find our brothers as strange as they think of us. We are all the same, and yet, different. Separated by oceans, lanscapes, and by each others soul. We are not but two races of color, but many. We are all in some way, different.

“Race” is your legacy. It’s important to take pride in your heritage, because without it, you wouldn’t be what you are today. Unwise people look at “Race” as a persona; it’s just physical characteristics with a background.

Brooke Maupin wrote @ December 11th, 2008 at 11:11 am

My belief is that race is based on our characteristics. At school race is based on skin color or how someone looks. Also in political races, race is determined on democrat or republican. So much of the world wants world peace but they cannot work that out unless they stop dividing people up by cliques at school and with segragation. I believe that when Roxy was considered bkack was because back in the time of slavery, if you had any percentage of anything other than white that you were not good enough. To me and a lot of others i know, it seems like all that is bad and mean. I think if the world wants to stop segragation then they need to accept people for who they are and not where they come from. That is what RACE means to me.
