Reading and Writing to Find Out Who We Are and What We Think

Twain and Race and NYC’s Radiolab

Great start on the race question. Now, as you continue to read and think about how Twain is instigating an inqury in to the nature of race listen to this website.

Listen to the first story, “Race Doesn’t Exsist, or Does it”. Then listen to the third piece, “can You See Race?”
After you’ve done that, write a reaction to the two pieces.Your reaction needs to be insightful, grammatically correct, and about 250 words long.

I am going to have to say that how you precieve your story is what your race is. The fact is the way your story goes are the expieriences you had.

I disagreed when they said that race has nothing to do with genetics. Race IS apart of who we are. It is in our blood, no matter if you are white but raised black, you are still considered white. But, then again race has nothing to do with the “sciency” things. Race is, agian, defined as who you are. Most of the times people can tell what race you are just by looking at you. Other times, alot of people get your race wrong because they automatically look at your skin color. I wouldn’t say that it’s racist. It’s just how other people group themselves.

Well, race in my opinion is just a word to name the difference between skin color and background. Without the word race people wouldn’t be able to label and point out the differinces in people and they certain way they look, or the belief people might practice, or their backgrounds, or their culture.

Mark Twain and the people at WNYC are on to something. In the first part of the radiolab podcast it is shown that skin color has little to do with genetics (my bio teacher would have something else to say about that), but genetics show where your ancestors are from. The third part tells of the horrors caused by racial hatred, which is often unfounded. As Twain has pointed out, your ancestors don’t determine who you are. When Roxy switched Tom with Chambers she didn’t realize this, and so “Tom” was as bad as any rich white kid of the time, and “Chambers” became a humble slave. All of this tells you that race has nothing to do with anything, your image of yourself shapes how you act. When school kids were asked what race some people in some photos were, they guessed wrong. When the Muslim who didn’t know if he was sunni or shiite was asked which he was, he lied to help his friend. Race is no tell-tale sign of what’s inside a person, it merely serves to categorize everyone. Race doesn’t tell who you are, it is how you react tthat opens a window to your heart. If I were born a slave I would be a different person than I am now, but if I were born parents of another color, that would have made no difference. Race has no meaning other than what you give it (sorry for this slip into the second person), so give wisely, because it will be only yourself that you change.

At first scientist were determined that race was not connected to genetics at all but at the same time there is the question why can you see it. At this time there was new technology that looked at the genetics and they used it to find a killer. They used a piece of this mans hair and they determined that the man was of African race. This technology looks at all of your genes and it has a information to it where they look at errors in your genes from many years ago and they can tell you what origin of people you come from. But at the same time I believe that it is the way that you look at people. I do not think that race is all told by genes but the environment you live in. It is not only genes that define you it also where you live like in Africa your skin is black because its so hot.

David Franklin wrote @ December 8th, 2008 at 6:10 pm

I think that there are genes that determine color or race. I am not saying the people on the radio are wrong, I am just saying they are not right, if that makes any sense. I still believe that race can be determined by genetics. I believe that if you see a white guy he is probably European; if you see a black guy he is probably African. I think that the gene that controls color or race has just not been found yet by scientist. I do also think though that genes can be mixed or altered. If an African and a European have babies I think that that the babies will mix and be darker than the European but lighter than the African. Everybody must also remember that nothing can be proven especially in science. As for the kids not being able to tell the race of a picture of a person, I just think that the test was fixed and the people in the pictures were exceptions from the usual stereotypes of race groups. It is also supported by doctors that some disorders or diseases are more likely to target certain races.

These two radio pieces made a lot of sense to me. The news reporters were very honest in saying that we people do just see people by the color of their skin and no necessarily what their background is. Someone may black, but that does not mean they have any African DNA or blood in them. I feel that after all of the things Americans have gone through in the history of racism that we, as Americans, would know better than to judge people by the color of a person’s skin. Well think again. Even today people are defined by their color. Whether it is black, white, asian, or any other color or place a person is from. The radio entries gave great examples of how we look at other people and how we look at ourselves. People also view themselves by the color of their own skin. This upsets and concerns me. I hate the fact that people only see others by who they are on the outside and not by what their DNA is or how they act as a person. I also hate that, as an American, I do it as well. I feel, after hearing these people speak, that i will try hard not to refer to people by the color of their skin.

Brian Westover wrote @ December 8th, 2008 at 6:54 pm

I have to say that these people on the radio are almost wrong in many aspects of their analysis. The first being that genes do control our skin color which thus dictates our race. The term race is a standard of classification that human beings use to better explain the world in which they live. It allows them to help us to describe the people of our world in a large stereotype that gives us a basic idea of what people look like and a basic understanding of what they talk and think like. In biological standards race doesn’t exist, skin color and basic physical aspects of the body however are dictated by genetics. Race is determined by the human need for classification of everything its how we remember things. So therefore race is an illusion to cover up man’s need to organize and classify things however it is genetics that gives race something to be classified by.

I feel like thats the only way to find out are race. In which to show if your only African American, Caucasian, or even both and etc. I mainly don’t agree in the fact that the scienitist who were working on this theory were wrong, becasue I think that race has to do with everbody’s own views, because it shows who we are and tells people in their views who we really are. So i ask how do we really know what we really are. In a way i only think about the genetics and who your ancestors were to show your background.

Katelyn Johnson wrote @ December 8th, 2008 at 8:17 pm

In the first radio talk, they were talking about if race exsits, and starting in June 26 2000, at they whitehouse, sciencist said that race died. Scientists were trying to prove that race is real, but they couldnt. 2 scientists said that there is no genetic or scientific bases. Later after that event, people started to say that it was sort of true that race has something to do with biological race. In 2003 or 2004 scientist used DNA to solve a crime and describe a white (race) male . With this inforamtion they made a genetic drive net for a crime and tested thousands or white men. The DNA test later showed that it was a black man, later in the investigation the man was found and he was black. Later, the radio people took the test and found out what there races were. It was the same test that helped solve the crime.
The next radio show was talking about if you can see race. In the beginnig of the show they went to a highschool where they were doing classwork on if you can see race. The teacher showed the class 8 pictures and the kids had to guess their race. The children only got 3 right out of 8. This showed that you couldnt really see race. Next story they talked about was a lot more serious. It talked about how just the way your name is spelt can determine your race and your life, and if you name isnt spelled in the write way you could get in serious danger.

Taylor Nault wrote @ December 9th, 2008 at 12:44 pm

Now that I think about it, race is a touchy subject. I think that you can find out people’s race by their genetics. I mean, I once saw on a TV that a woman had died, and was unrecognizable because she had been burned to death. The coroner was able to take DNA samples, and had enough information for him to know that she was African American. There has to some sort of genetics here. Why do Asians have small, almond eyes? Why do blacks have very curly hair? There has to be some sort of gene that makes races what they are. The radio talk show did have some good examples about how us, as Americans tend to first see what our color is, and then judge us. Our skins are just a cover up, no one can tell us what we really are, until we actually tell them. Some of us aren’t even really sure of what race we are. Even on the radio, the one talk show host was surprised to learn that he was 94% European, instead of Middle Eastern decent that he thought he was. Then, with the other show, they went to a high school to see if students could decipher the races of people in 8 pictures. They only got 3 out of 8 right. This goes to show you that people will just jump to conclusions about what race you are. I know it has happened to me. That is why I not going to jump to conclusions next time I see someone, a different color then myself.

Listening to this broadcast really put thing in perspective for me. Being able to tell someone’s height and eye color, just form annualizing a cheek swab is really cool. Now Mark Twain and WNYC have something in common, they both believe race is bigger then people think it is. People think race is only skin deep but the truth is, race can go all the way back to your great great great grandparents. Just because you look white on the out side or black, that does not mean you are black on the inside. The radio show talked about a man who took the test and thought he was black, when his results came back it turned out that there was no black part in his body. This came as a shock to the man and now he wonders if his life would have been different if he would have know when he was younger that he was not black. Now they talked about how when guessing what race kids are, other people guessed 3 out of 8 right. Race does show on the outside but that does not always show what is on the inside. People get treated differently because of the color of their skin, and I think that is completely wrong. You should not judge people by the color of their skin; you should wait in till you know about the person personally. In different parts of the world being a different race can get you beat or even killed, I don’t think that is right, just because you are a different race does not mean you are bad person. Before you jump to conclusions about someone’s race get to know him or her first.

Jason Tester wrote @ December 9th, 2008 at 2:46 pm

I believe race has to do with skin color, genetics and type of ethnicity, I disagree with WNYC Radio Lab when they were saying that race does not exist in genetics, Genetics are traits passed down from many generations from you great, great grandma or grandpa, genetics are were you come from, and also originate from. Race will always exist and be a major part in everyone’s lives, you cannot take race away from somebody, and if someone does you have every right to stand up and fight for what your race you are, color, ascent and the religion you follow. Many people judge persons on what race you are, or how you look and carry yourself around others. But it’s important to remember everyone has a certain race or heritage they follow, and it’s only fair to treat people the way you want to be treated. You will find race and different types of religion were ever you go, like restaurants, grocery stores, concerts, the mall, different neighborhoods, schools, were ever you go you will see different race. It would be a bad thing if everyone was the same color and talked, eat and grew up the same way, race is something that keeps the world a more interesting and better place to live, so in my opinion race will always be in our lives and live down for many generations.

Nicholas Rennels wrote @ December 9th, 2008 at 3:42 pm

I don’t think that you can see race. The man that thought he was black turned out being totally different. He was a mix of many things but did not have any black in him. This just shows that you cannot see race. People usually refer to where they came from in order to pick their race. How can you do this if many different ethnic groups come from the same country? There really is no way to pick a race by where someone comes from. If I said I was born in America, and you have never met me before. What race am I? What is the color of my skin? There is no way of knowing because there are so many different kinds of ethnic groups. Just because someone’s ancestors came from Africa doesn’t mean they are black. This goes for all areas. You just cannot say what someone looks like by knowing where they came from. Now another problem with this is what is race anyway? Is race the color of our skin? Can race be what group of people is just like us? Maybe there is no such thing as race. It is just what we perceive when we look at someone. It’s like I am on an assembly line. I come by some person slaps a label saying WHITE on me and then I get sent into the world. Did we make up race so a group of people can act like they are better? Look at slavery for an answer. Even if your skin was white and you were 1/32 black you were considered a slave. Now how can I walk up to somebody and say I think you are part black? You can’t tell someone is part anything just by looking at them. I mean what race gets Michael Jackson? He looks white but I’m sure a DNA test would prove he is something else. So what really is race? Maybe there is no such thing and we are just people.

on the 1st part of the radio show they talk about how there was a murder scene when a woman was visiting her mother’s grave they found her car. They assumed it was a white male who had murdered her because most % white you skin color could be white but you’re still African American.serial killers are white males which is a huge stereo type.Comes to find out the murder of the woman was black. Race is not biological they said.I believe that your genetics can have a part in the color of your skin it tells where your ancestors from and that could have a part in what color you unless you’re like 20% African American and then 75. In the second radio lab they talk about if you can see race, they went to a school and showed pictures of 8 people and they had the students guess the race of them. They only got like 3 right. That just means people assume you’re a race but what color you are there is way more to it. you could be tan and people could just assume you’re Mexican when you could be Filipino. That’s why people should just think you’re a specific race because the color of your skin.

Austin Langenstein wrote @ December 9th, 2008 at 5:51 pm

Race does exist, and that’s not just because there are people of different colors and such. I say this because race is created through people. If when a white person saw their first black person and they said “Hi”. Rather then saying you’re an inferior person because of the color of your skin, I believe that races would not have been created. If people had not treated black people like dirt for hundreds of years that we would have all been equal. We would all be the same on the inside and no one would look at anyone differently on the outside.
Yes race can be seen because that’s how we treated everyone for a point in time. We taught people that if you where not white there must be something wrong with you. They were treated as if they were not good enough. As if there was something wrong with them that was their fault. Where in reality if no one had started to make people less of a person by calling them names or putting people into slavery that races would not have been created and everyone would be a person equal in every aspect of life that they wanted to. I agree with David Franklin for the part that he says, “am not saying the people on the radio are wrong, I am just saying they are not right,” everyone can have a view on something and until there is an official way of something no one can be wrong because its all based on opinions and that cant be wrong.

Now thanks to this classification style it is true race cannot be seen. Think about it race is a mental classification system that each human adopts over the period of their lifetime so that they can converse with other people and understand what people are talking about. Since it is made up by the mind of man then it cannot be seen by anyone. So in the aspect of race not being able to be seen then the people on the radio were at least right on that bit of information. Those are all of the main points that I can find in this radio cast that I can comment on.

Race to me defines how your personal story will play out because no matter how much we want race not matter it does. so diffrent people have to deal with diffrent things. in a science point of view i think it does connect alot ancestory connects into race also which is where the science part is supposed to end.

I think race is very important to have because you can see it. It makes people who they are as individuals even though there are many people of the same race. I dont think anyone wants us all to be gray copies of each other we should learn to accept diffrence and not be afraid of the “unknown”.

Brandon Dunn wrote @ December 11th, 2008 at 1:46 pm

Okay, so this radiolab, I personally think they are right about the whole race is in our genetics. But they also mention the swab, and that’s where it all changes. So now its all about your ancestry, and how you became who you are. When Wayne comes on the show, hes black which he says, and so does his mother and brother. But when he does the swab of the cheeks, he finds out there is no black at all in him. Finding this out he changes his personality, which confuses me. Why would he change his WHOLE personality, with just one test? Yes hes technically white, but its not like it should change him. Then when they go to the school, like they said, can you really SEE race? They come to a conclusion, that most of the time, no you can not see race. But that other percent, why can we judge people on how they look? This as well confuses me to why we are so hung up on the way we all look. I personally think that we shouldn’t be based on the color of our skin, and should just ignore it. But the worst part of all, was when they went to the Baghdad scene. That annoyed me the most, just sitting there listening to how people can do that. How they can kill someone for not choosing the right way. You shouldn’t be judged on what religion you choose, neither should it cost you your life. Again, why are we so caught up in how we look or what religion we are?

Alicia Moyet wrote @ December 11th, 2008 at 1:47 pm

I also disagreed when the radio show said that genetics, race is who you are. Race is who you and your family is. Race is what you will always be, it runs through your blood. You cannot pick which race you are. I believe that everyone should be proud of their race. I hate when people stereotype others just because of their race, like i said before you cannot chose which race you are. Just because you are a certain race does not mean that you act one way, or you are rude or whatever the stereotype maybe for your race. It is not up to you race what kind of person you will be that is your personality.

Ron Hill wrote @ December 11th, 2008 at 6:04 pm

When I listened to “Race Doesn’t Exist, or Does It?” when that guy told us that little biology lesson I knew about, I also knew that wherever our ancestors migrated, their bodies began to adapt and evolve to the various climates to which they lived in. Which made modifications to the human race, that created DNA of skin, hair, eye, color and body shape, which has been passed on to us humans today. Over the history of the homo sapiens, our DNA has been pooled which has made all of our ethnicities. Now going to “Can you see race?” I believe that it’s not right to judge what you think someone’s race is. You would be then considered a stereotype.

Ashleigh Sisk wrote @ December 11th, 2008 at 7:10 pm

I felt that the whole science and genetic testing wasn’t very accurate. I don’t believe people should use it to find out their race. The scientist who wrote articles about the genetic testing and the scientist, who conducted the genetic testing, stated that genetic test could give a person an idea of what their race is, but could not guarantee it would be accurate.
Race does define you as a person, even though it should not. It does define you because people can look at a black person and think they are ghetto because they are black, or a person can look at a Middle Eastern and think they are terrorist. It should not define a person because people should be able to look past the color of skin. People don’t look at me and say; oh she’s prep or looks a black man and says he’s a gangster. I believe this is because these are things you don’t see on a daily basis, but skin color is.
In Iraq, Ali Abbas could not tell the difference between a Sunni and a Shi’a, because there was no difference. Nobody who lives in Iraq can tell if a person is a Sunni or a Shi’a unless they have a card that states which race they are or by the spelling of their names. Ali Abbas mother told him the only thing he needed to focus on was being a Muslim.
In conclusion, race should not be determined by genetic testing nor by the spelling of a persons name or a card they carry around.

Yes, race does exsist. Sometimes we can see race but you can’t always it. Also they may look like one race but not even be close to that race. Also most people see what race other people are by what others wear. So my answer for the question does race exsist is yes.

I have to say that the people on the radio are wrong in many ways of their observations. The first thing they said wrong was that genes control our skin color, which then states our race. The word race is a standard of classification that human beings use, to better explain the world in which they live. The term allows people to help us to describe to each other our world in a large stereotype. This then gives us a basic idea of what people look like and a basic understanding of what they talk and think like. In biological standards race does not exist, skin color and basic physical features of the body however are dictated by genetics. Race is determined by the human need for classification of everything. Race is how we remember our past. Race is something that will always be apart of you, it’s your skin color. To judge someone based on the pigmentation of their skin is oh so very wrong. People should not assume that just because of a person’s race is different from theirs; it will dictate their personality and culture. Difference in skin color is a beautiful thing. In the past I believe the only reason that people brought Africans to America is because they had never seen a person that color before. If an assortment of race was such a bad thing I’m sure colleges wouldn’t allow people from other countries attend free, it’s because of their differences, which have colleges and universities wanting to bring them to their locations.

Victoria Myles wrote @ December 17th, 2008 at 7:52 am

I don’t agree or dis agree with the radio anouncers. I think that genectics and race go hand in hand because of the genes you get from your parents also include your race. But genes and genetics change throughout generation while race stays, if you are white your not going to all the sudden be black as you get older. Race does exsist but on the “Can you see race” it shouldn’t matter what race you are, people should see you for who you are not your race/the color of your skin.

Molly White wrote @ December 17th, 2008 at 2:57 pm

I believe that race does exist..but race is based on looks. You hear people calling some black, white blacks. Well thats because they “act white.” But when you look at a black, they are black. I think if we were all the same color with the same personalitiy that we have now. Race would not exist. And I agree with what they say about how we are all the same on the inside but there look are what determine there race.
I think you can see race. I think that is what race is based on. If you talk to someone you have never seen in person..would you be able to tell what race they are? Most likely no..no you wouldnt. That is because people look at other people and look at there color and determine what they are.

I believe that races do exist, that it’s a story and a way of life. But, i also see it as just another way to label people. I don’t agree or disagree with the radio show, i think race and genetics are intertwined and work together. Each human is unique in their own way, and genetics and race both play a part in that. The race you’re raised as and the way you’re brain is put together makes up your personality. How you’re raised, and what’s already there. Race has a lot to do with the way someone sees another person. If the skin is dark, that person is black, which is what a lot of people live by. But, all in all, race and genetics work together to create each unique human being.

ray tillman wrote @ January 5th, 2009 at 10:28 am

Genes do determine our skin color, so it is true that genes determines race. Race helps us describe ourselves. The radio show was right when they mentioned that people tend to judge others by the color of our skin. I disagree with WNYC Radio Lab because they say that race does not exist in genetics.

Jaiah Knight wrote @ January 7th, 2009 at 9:14 am

I would have to say YES, I think race does exist beacuse without race…who are we? What do we repersent? I think race is a very important factor in our lives. I mean race defines who we are and not what we are. Race is also what and who we repersent. Race isn’t the color of our skin but it’s what we believe in. Race is what makes us all unique..I mean if everybody was the same race then we wouldnt be able to learn different cultures and different languages as we do now…so you see that we are all different in many way but we are all the same human beings.
