Read the text of President Obama’s speech.
Pick two parts that you like or disagree with. Copy and paste those parts into your response and then in react and respond to the ideas you chose. Your response must be free of errors, grammatically correct and insightful.
Example:
“In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned”
This idea appeals to me. I have thought that for too long our nation has behaved as though things were owed to us. Personally, I attribute this to the baby boom generation’s “me-centric” attitude. I think that anything worthwhile has to be earned, and I am willing to work for it. This part of the speech inspires me and makes me think about what I’m willing to do in order to make the world what I want it to be.

1.) Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.
I liked this statement because he tells the truth about the country. He is not scared to say the truth. This is what has happened to our country, and he cares about the planet and how it effects it. This is destroying our economy and needs to be fixed.
2.) Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America — they will be met.
I like what Obama says here because he is right. The challenges are real as he says, our economy is bad and real and its not going to be easy to fix. To me Obama seems to be a man of his word and said to all of america that it will be fixed. Our economy will beb back to the way it was.
“Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath.”
I thought it was funny when he said this, because he couldn’t even state the oath correctly. I’m not disappointed in Obama, because he couldn’t say it. I kind of showed everyone makes mistakes, even our leaders. With that said, I also don’t think a lot of people are going to be pleased with the fact that he did scrabble up the oath. People often want their leaders to be perfect. People always attack a person for making a mistake. That little situation with the oath made me think better of Obama.
“We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus — and non-believers.”
This was a nice touch to his speech. This helped describe that American doesn’t have one state of religion(or thought!). Him throwing these religions in his speech, even though he couldn’t name all of the millions of religion’s, made it a bit better, in my opinion. The fact that he would point these out shows to the public he doesn’t just want to use one as an example, when talking to Americans. I’m excited to see how his presidency turns out.

1.)This is the journey we continue today. We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on Earth. Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year. Our capacity remains undiminished. But our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions — that time has surely passed. Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.
I chose this statement because It is about starting fresh, turning a new page in all of our lives. Here Obama implies that we rebuild the country but not in the physical features kind of way but eternally, in our hearts and our actions. Helping out is one thing we can start to do in the country. We are gaining better control one step at a time. We need as many people as we can to get this country running better again.
2.)To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds. And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to the suffering outside our borders; nor can we consume the world’s resources without regard to effect. For the world has changed, and we must change with it.
I also chose this section of his speech because it shows that he cares about other countries than America. This shows that he is not willing to lend a helping hand or give food or homes to those in needs even out of the country.
1. To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds. And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to the suffering outside our borders; nor can we consume the world’s resources without regard to effect. For the world has changed, and we must change with it.
I chose this part of his speech because it shows the leadership of the country and of Obama. He is telling poorer nations that are not as good as others that we will help them in their struggle. I like how Obama is is going for equality of the nations. We will end world hunger and strive for equality of the nations which is the main point of this part of the speech.
2. As we consider the road that unfolds before us, we remember with humble gratitude those brave Americans who, at this very hour, patrol far-off deserts and distant mountains. They have something to tell us, just as the fallen heroes who lie in Arlington whisper through the ages. We honor them not only because they are guardians of our liberty, but because they embody the spirit of service; a willingness to find meaning in something greater than themselves. And yet, at this moment — a moment that will define a generation — it is precisely this spirit that must inhabit us all.
I chose this part of the speech because it lets us remember how we got to the point that we are at. President Obama tells us that as the future unfolds its because of past citizens we are were we are at. He lets us know are liberty was fought for from the past soldiers of this country. We as citizens have to remember the past to get to the future.
1) “Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please”.
I choose this quote because I agree with Obama. I believe that, sometimes, we Americans get blinded by greed- or do whatever we want, as Obama stated. And I think that, as a country, we need to be more respectful to every nation of the world, not just barge in and control everything. We need to be mindful of the wishes of every person on this planet, not just concerned with our own well-being.
2) “And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to the suffering outside our borders; nor can we consume the world’s resources without regard to effect. For the world has changed, and we must change with it”.
I choose this quote because I, again, agree with Obama. Sure, the economy isn’t great right now, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t extend help to the nations who need it more than we do. We are way more fortunate than most of us realize. I live in a small, two-bedroom apartment that, by most Americans, would be considered really shabby. But there are people out there whose dreams don’t contain a home so nice, with TV and air conditioning. In short, we need to not be selfish, but instead strive to help all countries be as prosperous as we are.

1. “Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America — they will be met.”
I feel that this part of Obama’s speech started the talk of all the problems we face. I say this because our country does face these challenges and more. He talks of how the problems will not be solved quickly and will not be easy. To me, this is a good thing because problems that are solved quickly and easily never last longer than other problems with a stronger and well thought out solution.
2.”The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works — whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified. Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end.”
This quote represents how much Obama thinks and will always think of our nation. He believes what i believe, which is that it doesn’t matter how many people are apart of the government as long as the government is strong and cares about the citizens of the United States. The government will do what it can to stay strong and be strong for the people of America to make sure everyone gets a chance to be something.

1. “Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath.”
-This bit of information is incorrect. Forty-three presidents have actually now taken the presidential oath. Grover Cleveland was the 22nd and 23rd president, thus only forty-three American citizens have taken the oath.
2. “A man whose father less than sixty years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath.”
-This is a really powerful statement. And it is true. Not sixty years ago, an African-American man could’ve walked into a restaurant and been ignored, but today, an African-American is one of the most powerful citizens in America. That goes to show that everything takes time to change and evolve into something new. It took time for segregation among the races to become a non-issue. Time can definitely change a lot of issues. Now look; our president is the first African-American president of the United States. That’s a huge mark in history that will be in our children’s textbooks some day.
mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. Those were some of his first words. I like the way he said that rather than mentioning the color of the ancestors. If the wouldve mentioned the color of his ancestors I am sure the crowd would have been a tad bit disgruntled.
2.Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. When he said that he meant that this is not the best of times, but we as americans will and can survive. And when we have a person like Barrack Obama in office, it just provides hope for everyone race and person, not just the black race.
3.. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; When he said that he means that the condition and / or state of americas living standards has just got to improve or really, we will just end up in yet another depression. If that happens everyone will probably blame Obama but he cant be held responsible for what the past president has messed up.
“On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises….”
I think that this statement is totally true! I mean we have been promised to win this war. Are we winning? I think losing men in battle is not winning, we’ve lost. We’ve lost lost of wondeful people, to a war that should be solved with words, or something like who has the better looking wife. If you think that’s silly, killing people because we’re defending our country, and they’re defending ours, that is silly! A false promise is saying to your country we will win this war, but really we’re losing, and so is the “enmy”.
“We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on Earth.”
Most powerful nation? There is no “powerful nation”. We think having smart people, and awesome weapons, and a “good economy”, is a powerful nation. But the countries that stay out of wars, and try to keep/make peace, are the powerful ones. They aren’t off trying to hurt someone else because someone did something to them. They be the bigger man and stay out of it! Other countries try to make it easy on their citizens, not make them poor by taking there money for health insurance, or exporting jobs. Without jobs you can’t have people who try hard, or get smarter, within their jobs. Without good jobs, without good insentive, you won’t have those brillant teachers, to theach students to become smart. Therefore without jobs no smart people.
Let’s be the smart country, who doesn’t get involved in wars, or try to corrupt our people with greed, this way we can be a prosperous nation.
1. ” Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because we the people have remained faithful to the ideals of our forebears, and true to our founding documents.”
I think that is an important part of President Obama’s speech because, it defines us as a nation, that we keep going through hard times. It also shows that it is not the few higher ups that keep the nation going but the people as a whole.
2.”Let it be told to the future world … that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive…that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet (it).”
“America, in the face of our common dangers, in this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words.”
This is important because Obama is bringing past victories into veiw and saying we can still pull through.
Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. I agree to this statement, but not fully, Obama had some trouble saying the oath and did not say it correctly. I believe they should let him try to say it again, to be sworn in to presidency you have to say the oath correctly. I still agree with him being president though, he did not mean to mess it up it was just a truthful mistake. So let us mark this day with remembrance, of who we are and how far we have traveled. In the year of America’s birth, in the coldest of months, a small band of patriots huddled by dying campfires on the shores of an icy river. The capital was abandoned. The enemy was advancing. The snow was stained with blood. At a moment when the outcome of our revolution was most in doubt, the father of our nation ordered these words be read to the people: “Let it be told to the future world … that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive…that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet (it).” I thought Obama really encouraged Americans to work hard, even though times are tough, don’t stop trying, and we will eventually get there if we put fourth a great effort.
1)”the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness”
I pick this one because just its America the free land everyone has the right to be happy, to live happy. To pursue there dreams even if others don’t approve. Every American has worked very had to get where they are today. Some people have givin up everything I completely agree with this statement. Every aspect of it is true.
2)”As we consider the road that unfolds before us, we remember with humble gratitude those brave Americans who, at this very hour, patrol far-off deserts and distant mountains. ”
I picked this one because every American out there fighting for our safty and trying to help thoses who are hurt are really the heroes not anyone here sitting around doing everyday things. Those who will do anything for there country they are the ones we need to honoring every last one of them.
“Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America — they will be met”.
President Obama talks about the challenges we face as a nation today. He speaks the truth and thats what I like about him. He knows that things arent going to be easy and that it will take time. As of now things can only get better from the ression George W. Bush put us in.
America, in the face of our common dangers, in this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words. With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come. Let it be said by our children’s children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God’s grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations.
I like what President Obama has to say. He gives us hope and courage, not just as a country, but as a citizen of the United States. He makes you think that everything its going to be okay, and that things cant get worse from what they arleady have.
“For us, they fought and died, in places like Concord and Gettysburg; Normandy and Khe Sanh”
“They saw America as bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions; greater than all the differences of birth or wealth or faction.”
Both of the phrases reakte back to our ancestors who came here so we could have a better life. These phrases tell us that we cannot take what they did for granted and that we have to stop being lazy and act. Obama is telling us that what we are facing parallels what they faced and we have to act upon it how they did, with hope that our kids will have a better future.
On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.
We the people need to take to heart about this passage because we are going through a tough time in america today. Instead of having fear of the economy and of the hopeless, we should have the courage and fearless heart of the problems that we as americans face today. I like this one because it gives hope and peacefull comfort to americans. I dont think i have a dislike.
We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.
I like this paragraph because it inspires me to as a the young generation that has the opportunity to change what happens in America. Also he states an amendment that talks about being free to do what you like to make you happy. By this we can change the future by how we obtain our own actions, thoughts, and feelings.
“For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness.”
I agree with this statement, the varied backgrounds of Americans is one of America’s greatest strengths. These backgrounds are established by people from other countries, who have learned from their problems, and can teach us lessons about how to avoid the things that have ruined governments, caused strife, or oppressed people.
“Now, there are some who question the scale of our ambitions — who suggest that our system cannot tolerate too many big plans. Their memories are short. For they have forgotten what this country has already done; what free men and women can achieve when imagination is joined to common purpose, and necessity to courage. ”
I disagree with President Obama on this, in the past plans and ambitions have never suceeded in solving problems. Imagination, commmon purpose, and courage from necessity have helped this nation in all of its predicaments, but they always came from the people who were working outside of the system. America would not exist if its founders had decided to spend taxes drawn from the blood of citizens to help them help themselves. No, it is too much like the powers colonials were trying to escape, the reason we have an independant nation.
“Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age.”
I love this quote, he is not afraid to say what is going wrong in America today. We cannot afford the problems of the United States to be sugar coated. We need straight forward answers and we need the as soon and possible. We do not want and cannot have the United States economy getting and worse.
“In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned.”
This quote I also really like because it is completely true, the fixing of America and reaffirming will not be given to up we will have to work for it. We cannot just sit around and hope for change anymore, we must get up and do something about it ourselves. After all nothing in this world would ever get done if someone had not gotten up and done it themselves.
“Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America: They will be met.”
This quote stood out the most to me because he has said that there are many serious challenges and that they will not be met easily or in a short span but he did say they would be met.I really liked this quote becuase our country has been through a whole lot and has seen a lot and for him to tell us that someday hope will be returned and the way life as we know it now we be changed. It just gives those people who have been hoping for a change faith. For those who never thought it would be true one day that we would have a African-American priesident some hope that our country has changed. If we were to go back sixty years ago no man would believe it.
“For the world has changed, and we must change with it.”
The world has changed and its true .Our economy has taken a big fall and unemployment has sky rocket. But what he is saying is that we can’t just sitting around hoping for change. We have to get out and make a difference , cause these changes we want won’t be made on there own.He is asking us to change with it ,to get out and be a doer , make a difference.Because for the younger generation this is our future that we will be making a difference for.History was been made our 44th president of the United States was the nation’s first African-American president. That day will be mark down in history as a day of change and hope.

“Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America — they will be met.”
President Obama does a great job with this quote because he teliing citzens to be patient . Our problems our very big right now and he knows that he won’t get them acomplish right away, so he doesn’t lie. I supported Barrack because he was a” down to earth” person, he not going to tell you bold face lie, he going to tell the truth.
“we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you. ”
I loved this quote! It’says it all, we might be down, but not out and we will come back stronger than ever. Show why we are the most powerful country ever, then beat the challenges that we meet.
” Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America — they will be met.”
Hear Obama is promising the country of America that he will meet all of the problems that we face as a nation today. He says that it will take time to meet all of theses problems but he will do it. I do not agree with Obama and what he stands for but I am willing to give him a chance. I am willing to give him a chance to help fix the economic problems that we face as a nation. If he does help these problems that we as a nation face today than I will accept him as my President. If Obama is a man of his word than he will take action as soon as possible and he will do all he can in his knowledge to help out nations problems. I pray very deeply that Obama is a man of his word and that he has a plan to help our nation to get out of the horrible holes that we have dug ourselves into and that he can also get our in peace.
“We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace.”
This part of his speech really stood out to me because it shows that the United States has already been through very harsh times and that we can make it through these harsh times once more. Our history has only made us stronger as a country. There is no need for hatred amoung races or religions anymore. I believe that President Obama has what it takes to get us through these tough times and that we will be able to succeed with his guidance.
“This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed — why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent Mall, and why a man whose father less than sixty years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath.”
With this being said, Obama has made the world and especially our country think about how far we have come as a whole. From African Americans being denied their freedom, to an African American being elected as president. How things have changed, and still are changing, now show stronger than ever. Discrimination and racism will only continue decreasing and will hopefully soon be no more.
1)“Each and every time, a new generation has risen up and done what’s needed to be done. Today we are called once more — and it is time for our generation to answer that call. For that is our unyielding faith — that in the face of impossible odds, people who love their country can change it.”
All I had to do, to find out that I loved this quote, was read the first sentence. “Each and every time a new generation has RISEN up and done what has NEEDED to be done.” (President Barack Obama). These words really stood out to me because when President Obama said this, it made me think of us (our nation) as more of a family, a community, rather than just random people that live on the same continent. Barack Obama is more than just Mr. President, he is our leader.
2)”It’s the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, Black, White, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, Gay, Straight, Disabled and not disabled, Americans who send a message to the world that we have never been just a collection of individuals or a collection of red states and blue states. We are and always will be the United States of America.”
This quote stood out to me because President Obama is saying that, as history says, American is a big “mixing pot” made up of all different kinds of religion, race, skin color but in the end, we all come together to form a union, a family, the United States of America. I doesn’t matter if you don’t like your neighbor, in the end, and even now, you have to suck it up so to speak and do what’s best for your community, your family and your country.
“Their memories are short. For they have forgotten what this country has already done; what free men and women can achieve when imagination is joined to common purpose, and necessity to courage. ” I really l ike he things that Obama is trying to do to help our country. He wants to make our eceonmy better, and he wants to help the schools out because there is a lot of problems with schools rie now. I not saying that i like obama just because he is black, I think he is really going to help this country alot.
“Time and again these men and women struggled and sacrificed and worked till their hands were raw so that we might live a better life.” He is just so good how he realzied how much our ancestors did for us. If it wasn’t for our ancestor we wouldn’t be here rite now. The White House and all the other buildings that are onn the mall were build by slaves. They would work day and night working on these building.
1. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered.
I pick this part of speech because i like what he said. it showed me that he knows the situation are country is in now. Like how people losing houses and how peploe have to make choices about food or the bills. He knows why we are in the situation that we are in today.
2. With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come. Let it be said by our children’s children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter.
I like this part because it shows he believes that this country can get better. He is asking the people to beleve that life will get better and for the people not to stop believing. He is confident the country will get better with him as president. He knows bad times might come again and he is willing to try to fix that if the come.
1)”We are the keepers of this legacy. Guided by these principles once more, we can meet those new threats that demand even greater effort — even greater cooperation and understanding between nations. We will begin to responsibly leave Iraq to its people, and forge a hard-earned peace in Afghanistan. With old friends and former foes, we will work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat, and roll back the specter of a warming planet. We will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defense, and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you.” I agree with this statement totally. We as a nation need to prevent global warming, to bring peace to other nations, and we need to end war. Our soldiers need to come back home. Also we need to help save our planet before it is to late. This nation is one of the strongest nations in the world. Many innocent people have been injured and killed by terrorist attacks. Those terrorist need to be stoped, and those that wish to hurt the innocent people of this nation will be destroyed. We do not need to apologize for our actions, because we do things to help protect our nation. But as a nation we do need to fix what has been broken.
2)”But our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions — that time has surely passed. Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.” I agree with this perticular statement because we need to fix our nation. So many people are losing their home because they cant afford it, unemployment rate is getting higher by the day, and so many other issues. For so long we procrastinated desicions we dont want to make. We as a nation need to do everything we can to help bring our nation back up. Things will get worse before they get better but I believe he will help bring our nation back up to where it needs to be.
“I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition.” I find this quote kind of ironic because of how President Bush did during his presidency. Obama is coming into the office during one of the worst times our country has ever seen. He has a very heavy task in front of him. He could be one of the best things that our country has ever seen, or could send it right down the toilet!
“That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.” I like this quote because it explains tells exactly what he is going to do. He doesn’t beat around the bush at all, he gets to the point and doesn’t mess with things that are not important with his writing structure.
“We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus — and non-believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth”
I think that the above quote from President Obama’s speech really showed that he was not just talking to the majority of the people in the Unted States, he was talking to all of them, including the ones that didn’t support him or don’t agree with him.
“Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.”
I also like this paragraph in President Obama’s speech because Obama is right. Power alone cannot protect us. There is an infinate number of things that we could do better to protect ourselves. The sky is the limit.
1. “Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America — they will be met.”
I like this quote because here Barack Obama is saying that our nation is going through very hard times, but we will get through them. Some people blame George W. Bush for what we are going through, and they also say that it didn’t take only four years to get where we are. So to me Obama is saying everything will not be perfect in four years, but he is saying that it will be done.
2. “To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds. And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to the suffering outside our borders; nor can we consume the world’s resources without regard to effect. For the world has changed, and we must change with it.”
In this quote here, Barack Obama has said that we are pledging to help 3rd world countries that don’t have the same benefits as the United States of America. He is saying that we are not better than other nations, but we do have more resources than some other countries and those are the countries that we will help. At this point in his speech he is speaking about helping all nations other than ourselves.

“We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.”
I noticed the value of this statement because it connects to two of the utmost documents ever known. The Bible and The United States Declaration of Independence. Unlike our last president, Obama understands the truthful livelihood of the presidency. He realizes that as president, he has to do what the people need and what’s right for them. Obama shares a common right with his fellow Americans, Life, Liberty and The Pursuit of Happiness.
“For as much as government can do and must do, it is ultimately the faith and determination of the American people upon which this nation relies. It is the kindness to take in a stranger when the levees break, the selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than see a friend lose their job, which sees us through our darkest hours. It is the firefighter’s courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke, but also a parent’s willingness to nurture a child, that finally decides our fate.”
Obama relates to an icon that could have been one of the greatest presidents in the history of the U.S. During his inauguration speech JFK said “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” It sounds like Obama wants the strength from the American people, to carry on to assist the countries tribulations.
“Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age.”
I like that Obama stated that our economy is where its at because of both the greed of others and the mistakes of the collective body of the united states not knowing how to prepare for this changing world.
I like that he brought up scripture in this speech. In my opinion I find it important that our leader to have a religious faith. It shows that a person has morals and character.
1.”These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics”
2. “Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred”
I feel President Obama is a great person but he has to watch what he says! I feel he shouldn’t open his month until he fixes the problem, due to the raceism he faces , he shouldn’t guarantee anything until he can have the supporting details to support his case.
I feel President Obama is very smart for bringing up the topic of the war. He isn’t affraid to tell the nation his views of the war and I really appreciate that honeisty and agree with him one-hundred percent !
1) Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America — they will be met.
I chose this quote because it is telling the United States people that President Obama is aware of the people’s problems and those of the country. He is also saying that he cannot fix these problems overnight, but is assuring the people that all these problems will met in the future. This quote makes the people feel confident that they made the right choice and everything will be okay.
2) In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of shortcuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted — for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things — some celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labor, who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom.
I chose this quote because I like how it shows that our nation is great not because of all the stuff we have or because we are better than others, but we have earned our greatness. We have fought for our freedom and done a lot of work for what we have today. Our country was not made the way it is today by people sitting around and just working; it was made from those people who had the new ideas and those who were willing to try new things. I also like that it says that we have to work hard to earn our greatness. It tells the history of how our country had become what it is today.
On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics.
This quote show’s that President Obama is really up for a change. I also like how he said one this day “we” will come to procaim. Why? Because, as a nation we are one, we need to work togather to overcome any optical life gives us.
This quote also touched me. President Obama spoke out as he should have to let other developed and undeveloped Country’s know that we will help and create a friendship for the good.
1. “That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age.”
a. I chose this quote, because mainly the part where how we failed to make hard decisions for us to make a new begging in for the future. The ideas that he has for us I think are great. And I truly think that he can really help out this nation if we help along with him to make better decisions for this up coming future.
2. “Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America — they will be met.”
b. I really like this quote, because the facts that he will be here to help out are economic and financial problems and ect, but it is not going to be easy and quick. This situation is going to be hard and take long to fix. The main thing though is that he said this will clear up but we have to hold up strong.
“Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred”.
“The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act”.
I believe these quotes support many true statements. We have spent so much money on the war, and now it is creating problems in our country. Many people are losing jobs, foreclosures are occurring, and many are becoming bankrupt. The U.S. has taken a big hit and in other words, we are falling into a recession. Hopefully, Obama can turn this economy around, so we don’t fall into a depression. Obama sounds very confident with his remarks and decisions. However, my question is if he is going to act and finish? The war has published anger among our nation and our enemy’s nation. This hatred and violence from this war has killed many love ones. I believe Obama is going to get us out of the war and build our economy up, rising us back to one of the most powerful nations. Must I ask though, if we depart from the war of terror, Will issues turn out better in Iraq, or will there be many more problems and terrorists attacks due to our actions we have made to their government and country? On the other hand, we need to worry about our economy too. Our nation must stay strong and devote time and hard work to help the economy. Giving out money to major companies by the government is just putting us more in debt. The war has coasted us much money and has put us in a hole. In my opinion, Obama can be the one to dig us out. The United States must stay positive and try our best to get through these harsh times.
I liked this quote because there aren’t a lot of political figures that I’ve heard of who mention the bible. Obama is obliviously a very religious and connective person. When is say connective I’m referring to the fact that he has a way with understanding the problems of other people and actually doing something about it. I also like the fact that he states that we as a nation are all equals to each other.
“We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus — and non-believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace.”
This is also a good quote because throughout Obama’s speech he seems to be able to turn the topic back to slavery, segregation, and discrimination. But he speaks of the good and the bad about American stating that yes we are a country with many different backgrounds yet we are all equal.

1. “For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act — not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together.”
This qoute, I feel is very important. As long as the new president follows these words, the country will be a better place. Improving the economy is one of the most important factors in the US. More jobs keep unemployment rate low, better roads and bridges lead to better transportation, and in all, a better economy leads to a better country.
2. “Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.”
I think that this is one of his best qoutes. It applies not only just to America, but to each and every individual in America. As long as we keep the economy in good shape, and clean up after our mistakes, America will be better as a whole. And as long as we support Obama the best way in every way, we will make a change.
“For us, they fought and died, in places like Concord and Gettysburg; Normandy and Khe Sanh.”
“They saw America as bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions; greater than all the differences of birth or wealth or faction.”
These quotes caught my eye because of how “in place” they were. Our new President is standing in front of us and telling us that it is not ok for him to rest even on the first day he is president. He is saying that men and women have fought much harder, and against greater odds for us to be free. It would be selfish for us to be lazy and not do any work. Obama is telling the nation that there is no more time to wait and each one of us has to get up and take action before it is too late. He is saying we have to set aside our differences and join together for a single cause, because if not it will hurt us all in the near future even more than it is hurting now.
“Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America — they will be met.”
This quote really caught my eye while reading president Obama’s speech. I like that he said this, for few reasons but ones that I feel are very important. Many presidents in the past have promised things but never came through with them. This quote to me is saying that his is going to do something, and it will take sometime but it will get done. By saying this he is not getting people too excited about things that may not happen for another 2 to 3 years. Personally I can appreciate that because I that sentence I can really feel that President Obama is really Passionate about what he want done. I felt that small quote meant very big things in his speech.
“We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on Earth. Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year.”
This quote also I felt was a major part in President Obama’s speech. I think this could be used as a major confidence builder for so many people in our country; it’s a reminder that we are one of the most powerful nations on earth. This line to me was saying the economy might be bad but our country is not. I think many people needed to hear that because I think it’s really the truth many people might have forgotten about, just because the bad economy is blinding them from seeing that. This sentence really jumped out at me, and I really hope those listening heard that part of President Obama’s speech.
For us, they packed up their few worldly possessions and traveled across oceans in search of a new life.
For us, they toiled in sweatshops and settled the West; endured the lash of the whip and plowed the hard earth.
For us, they fought and died, in places like Concord and Gettysburg; Normandy and Khe Sanh.
I believe this means that in order for something to grow you have to go through an amount of hardship. It also says that America was built on the dreams and the lives of people that believe in America. If we were to let America die than all of the people that died for this dream would be for nothing.
Now, there are some who question the scale of our ambitions — who suggest that our system cannot tolerate too many big plans. Their memories are short. For they have forgotten what this country has already done; what free men and women can achieve when imagination is joined to common purpose, and necessity to courage.
I believe that this passage means that just because America is down doesn’t mean it is out. Take for example the great depression we were stuck in that for awhile but we came back stronger than ever after we got out. It also means that there is always a silver lining to anything.
“For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act — not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth.”
I like the way Obama says he will come up with a bold and swift plan to fix our economy. We need a fast plan becuase if we get any ourselfs any deeper in the hole, it will be to late. Nothing will be able to get us out.
“To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds.”
This quote is important to America because it says we are going to help the world like we haven’t in the last 8 years. I know we are going through hard times right now, but we are still are better off than most nations. I think that, even through these hard times you should not just think about yourself because there are always other people who have it worse.
“The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act — not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together.”
I like this quote from president Obama’s speech because he says he will come up with a bold and swift plan to fix our economy. We need the plan quickly because if we get any deeper in the hole, we won’t be able to get out of it.
“To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds.”
This is a good quote for America because it says that we will help other countries, like we haven’t in the last 8 years. Even though our economy is in bad condition we should still help out the undeveloped nation. That is because there is always someone who has it worse than you do.
1.”Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America — they will be met.”
That is a very strong and promising statement when President Obama said that. I do not agree with everything he says and does, but I am very willing to give him a chance on what he does to fix the mess that we are in right now. I am very willing to do that because I am a Christian and in the Bible, Romans Chapter 13 it clearly says that everyone must submit to your authorities, including government authorities. So yes the challenges America faces today are serious, and there are many, and they probably won’t be taken care of easily, but President Obama is very determined to fix them, and I pray for him the best of luck in his years in office.
2.”For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act — not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together. We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield technology’s wonders to raise health care’s quality and lower its cost. We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories. And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age. All this we can do. All this we will do.”
Again, this is another strong and promising part of President Obama’s speech. And I am again willing to stand behind him. I do not agree with all his ideas as well as other conservatives like myself, but if you do follow God, than giving President Obama a chance is the very right thing to do. This quote is just like the first one I chose except that he actually stated the problems, and said what he will do to fix them. At the end of this quote he says, “All this we can do. All this we will do.” That shows me that he is determined to fix our problems. I have great hope for him in office. I am behind President Obama 100% and pray for him to do a very good job serving and doing what is right for our country.
1. “Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America — they will be met.”
I think that president Obama is promising us too much. There are a lot of problems in the world today, through the war, our economy, and more. Although this seams like a hard thing to accomplish i am going to try and hear him out. When he says he is going to meet these problems, he also says he knows its going to be hard and it is going to take time, this shows he knows how hard it will be, and it is good to know he is trying.
2. ” For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act — not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together.”
Obama is saying that we will fix the economy together, and make new jobs to help the economy get stronger. I think that this is something good. Having new jebs will help the eonomy grow and give the nation more opprotunities. I hope that Obama will really try to get our nation tegether and help make our economy better.
“Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America — they will be met.”
This is a rather bold statement by Mr. Obama. I don’t think it is the brightest idea for him to say that all America’s challenges will be met. This is giving all Americans false hope. By the time his four years are up, what if he hasn’t been able to meet all the challenges? People will think of him as a liar, and a scam. His confidence is what might come back to haunt him later down the road in his presidency. There are many things that America is facing right now, and to say that he will meet every single one of them shows me that he is a bit overconfident about what he will be able to achieve in his years of office.
“Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.”
- Although I am still skeptical about the election of Barack Obama as president, I am really hoping that he takes this quote to heart. Hopefully, by 2012, we will be in a better economic market and a safer America. All of us Americans need to be able to make better decisions concerning our futures. God permitting, Obama will hopefully will be what America needs to begin a better country as a whole.
I really liked President Obama’s speech he gave during his inauguration. He kept talking about our founding fathers and what they have done and what we are doing now that is respecting what they have done for our freedom. He really thinks a lot about America and wants to help all the people. We are a country made of up a lot of religions, and backgrounds. In America it is OK to be different. It’s our right to stand up for what we believe in. Because of all the people before us that fought to keep our freedoms. He talked a lot about the work to be done to make things better. He knows that Americans voted for him to make a good change in our lives. He is a strong man who sees the trouble the country is in and is ready to work on making it better. My favorite quote in his speech is “Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America — they will be met.” I like this quote because he talks about knowing just how hard we have it now. He wants to fix things. And he wants to let us all know he will get the job done. But he talks a lot about how it is the duty of all citizens to work hard to build a better America. That means keeping the faith, and working hard to keep the freedom America stands for. He wants to help make the entire world a better place for us all to live.

Obama’s speech gave me chills because it was so powerful and heartfelt. When President Obama spoke it captured my attention because Obama spoke so calm and cool. The reason I liked the speech was because Obama seems to care alot about this nation and its people. The two quotes that stood out to me the most were
“On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.”
This quote is powerful and its so true because people seemed to be a little nerves that there would be a black president. And the fact that they still believed in him and voted for him shows they wanted change in America.
the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.”
I like this quote because it makes me feel like there is hope, like if I put my heart into something i can do it.
“We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus — and non-believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth;”
I agree with this quote because the United States isn’t just made on one religion or one culture but made of many. Our founding fathers all have different background and cultures. The U.S. is based on different backgrounds, and beliefs, its okay to be different here. The new President Barack Obama is different from the past presidents and if our nation was not made up of different religions and cultures, Obama wouldn’t be president.
“To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds”
I like this quote because it’s saying that we aren’t going to just think about ourselves, but of other people. We are going to do everything to help less fortunate nations. We and other nations who have an abundance of wealth need to reach out and help others. It may not be an easy task but working all together it can be done.
“This is the journey we continue today. For everywhere we look, there is work to be done.”
President Obama is letting us knows that making America a better country won’t be a walk in the park. It will require not only his hard work, but ours also. We can’t just depend on President Obama to make America better. Despite how bad our economy has been left by the past president, we must take a chance and put our faith in President Obama and work hard with him to remake America.
“For as much as government can do and must do, it is ultimately the faith and determination of the American people upon which this nation relies. It is the kindness to take in a stranger when the levees break, the selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than see a friend lose their job which sees us through our darkest hours. It is the firefighter’s courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke, but also a parent’s willingness to nurture a child, that finally decides our fate.”
The government will do everything it can to better our nation. But the American people are what really determine the depth of our success in making America better. I believe American people are now determined to do this because we now see government as help instead of a burden to us. American people also have to help one another and become more united. President Obama lets us know that we are all in this together, and that he is working with us to reach our goals as a nation.
1. “Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath”. That statement right there is totally incorrect. Only 43 people have taken this oath. Grover Cleveland was our 22nd and our 23rd president. So technically that statement is just a little bit off. But that’s ok.
2. “That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred.” That statement right there is a tad bit judgemental. Not everyone in the middle east are violent and hateful people. Just because there are many events/occasions that showed a detesting vibe toward our country (9/11) is one example. Sure it crippled America emotionally, made our security simply double in this last couple of years, and make a couple of adults in my life simply unstabe. I think that we still have absolutely no reason at all to hate middle eastern people.
“That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. ”
I chose this because he knows what is going on in America. He notices the problem we face each day as people living in the United States. He isn’t afraid to put it out there for people to realize. he speaks the truth, as some may put it.
“We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on Earth. Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year.”
I liked this quote when i read it because again it speaks the truth. He states that nothing is really changing throughout it all. All of our goods and services we provide each day are just as important as any other time in the past 8 years.
“On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.” This appeals to me in many ways. The first is that it is a perfect parallel to FDR’s quote of “We have nothing to fear but fear itself” which means simply that for once in our life we have learned from the past. We have realized that our fear is what causes economic problems such as the ones that we have been experiencing of late. Also fear is what has caused almost all of our major problems in history. It is also what has caused much of the violence in our nations history such as the civil war. The south was scared that the north was going to take away their way of life so they seceded and, presto, instant war. Thus this quote is about as true as possible.
“For us, they packed up their few worldly possessions and traveled across oceans in search of a new life.” No I don’t really agree with this quote and with good reason. First off the immigrants of the old ages didn’t move here for us, they moved here for themselves. Now I’m not calling them selfish but they were trying to make their lives easier for the sake of their survival and their present families. Life sucked in the countries that they lived in before they came here and the promise of high wages and the chance to start life over without their past wearing away at them. But yes they did cross the ocean to get here, and yes they brought their only possessions with them, but that’s the only real truth in this quote.
“Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America — they will be met”.
“America, in the face of our common dangers, in this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words. With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come. Let it be said by our children’s children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God’s grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations.”
President Obama tells us about the obstacles we are going through as a whole nation. President Obama tells the truth and that is a great quality to have as President and also why lots of people including me like him. He says these obstacles we face might even take years to fix but he says he will fix them. Things can’t get any worse from what George Bush put America in. It can only get better. I like what President Obama has to say. He gives us hope and courage, not just as a country, but as a citizen of the United States. He makes you think that everything its going to be okay, and those things can’t get worse from what they already have.
