Which of the singers that Walker mentions do you think best represents the, “notion of song“? Remember to write about the quality of the singer rather than the song’s lyrics.
Your response should be around 10 sentences long and, as always, be grammatically correct.

Aretha Franklin best represents the “notion of song” to me. She sings from her soul and it is her passion to sing. Back in her day you had to fight really hard to become a singer and she did because that is what she wanted to do. She puts all of her emotion in her singing, and when she sings you feel what she is singing about, she puts those feeling in you heart and mind. The energy she uses when she sings a happy song just makes your day a little brighter and better.
In my personal opinion, I, Shafer think that the older the origin or birth of the singer, the more notion of song. Some of the newer singers:Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Jennifer Hudson may have better voices. But not all of them have better voices, some of them: Rihanna, Pink, etc. just don’t really have the voice in my opinion to be a star. But the older singers have way more soul in their music, and they have it by a very large margin! You can really just listen to two artists one old school and one new school, and trust me the old school will just have more genuine feeling. Now if we go way back to billie holidae’s era her soul will make a macho man cry! All of her feelings and emotions simply get poured out into her music. Those reasons that I stated earlier is the reason why I think older artists have a better notion of song.
Slaves and their slave songs best represent the “notion of song” to me because when they sang their songs, they were singing from their heart because, most of the time their life depended on it ie: when they we on the Underground Railroad trying to get to freedom. When they sang-they threw their heart and soul into the song and thats how it should be. If your going to be a singer you shouldnt just stand up on stage and say words that are meaningless to you..make it come from your soul. when you sing a song it should be about something that you as the singer have encountered in your life. Thats why all singers should write their own lyrics-so they know how much joy or sadness or pain or whatever that that icident brought to you as a person because when you sing a song from the heart then the listeners will relate to the song better. They will be able to relate and say “oh wow. i had this happen to me too” or “wow. this is how I felt when this happened to me..this singer can really relate to his/her listeners!” and so on and so on.

Aretha Franklin really expresses the voice and the notion of song. Although, recently Aretha has been having some bad eating habits, but her voice is so well toned it makes up for it. She uses a magnificent tone that contracts her audience and soaks them in. It’s like she is trying to tell a story, through her voice, expressing it through past. She is proving that Black women do not receive enough respect. I enjoy this type of music because it helps me understand how it was back in the slave years, and how i have to earn respect. This helps me work harder in life. Other than Aretha, the original notion artists were slaves singing in the fields while at work together. Slaves started the stories and i strongly agree the Mrs. Franklin took this origin to a different level .
Well if i were to think of anyone who really got in tune with the notion of song i would have to say that Pink is one of the more known. Now personally I like a few of her songs but the one that really shows the notion of song is quite frankly one of the few songs that I hate. However my sister listens to it all the time so its always going through my head. “Dear Mr. President” is written and performed by Pink. For the most part the song is a free form of expression in one of the best possible ways. Not only does she tell the world that she doesn’t like Bush but the way she sings it she proves it to those who listen to the song through how much emotion she puts into her voice. Also on top of the fact that she can put all the proof into her voice she uses the lyrics to help drive home her point. This is the true idea of the notion of song, to release stored energy and convert it into a creative outlet for itself. Along with this song Pink writes almost all of her songs such as the new hit song “So what?” and they all have something to do with something that she doesn’t agree with. Therefore she is using her creativity to release her anger and other stored negative energies which is again the true notion of song. Thus Pink is a great example of an artist who sings using the notion of song.
I good representation of the quote “notion of song”, would have to be by slaves, and their slave songs. They reason I say slaves, and their slave songs because that would be the only way they could express themselves. Whether is be to express their feelings, or to let others know of a way to escape. This causes them to put all the passion that have into one of the few things they could express themselves with. With the tidbit of freedom they had, to sing, they had to make it as meaningful, and as strong as possible. This included the tone of the song, as much as the lyrics. If they had put all of their effort into the lyrics alone the songs couldn’t, and wouldn’t be as powerful to themselves, or other listeners. This would almost force the “artist” to create a good rhythm, and tone for the songs they create. Without these strong, deep, and passionate songs, along with song writers need to express themselves we wouldn’t have a strong aspect on the full potential of the music we now listen to.
Aretha Franklin hands down discribes “the notion of song” the best. When I hear her voice I can just imagine all the pain and sarrow shes been through. She always sings with a grudge on her shoulder like a burning passion that fuels her to sing from self experinces . I find it hard for any one in the present music industry to even come close to the soulful and powerful voice of Aretha Franklin . The main reason is because many of the singers today sing about failed relationships or how they have been cheated on. When Aretha sings with the passion of living through racism during the 1950’s as a child.
I listened to Aretha Franklin and Ciara. I listened to the two to realize their notions of song. Aretha Franklin made her music seem like it wanted to be heard, because it did. Her music made it seem like she wanted people to realize everybody’s own lives and how they needed to change how the world acted upon others.
I also listened to Ciara. For one of Ciara’s songs I used “one, two step. Her notion of song was completely different than Aretha’s but similar. In a way they both want to get you up and moving. Ciara made this song want you to get up and dance or move with the beat. I believe that both of these songs would be a wonderful symbol of the notion of music.
I think Aretha Franklin is the notation of song because when she sings, the emotion of her voice makes me feel like she is telling me that people should respect me. She also doesnt put junk in her song to make the song fantastic but she does it because she is trying to tell me something. The reason why I think Aretha Franklin has more emotion to her songs then like Beyonce because i don’t think Aretha did this career just to make money. The girls now and days really dont have the right stuff then Aretha. Also Beyonce or any of these modern day woman singers can fake it. They can be on stage and sing and people love them for a couple of days or so. With Aretha, she is loved many people back from her day because our parents didn’t have to go through all the junk singers us teenagers do now. I, Jon thinks that Aretha is the better example.
I think that the Slaves best represent the “notion of song”. I think that they put the most heart and soul into making their music. Through joy and pain they sang it all. They sang about their lives and the struggle that they went through each day. Music now-a-days isn’t like the music they used to make. It was all true and pure. They couldn’t express themselves any other way and they always did a good job putting it in song. Music shouldn’t be meaningless because then it just makes it pointless lies. If you’re going to sing about something then at least speak the truth. I believe the Slaves best represent the “notion of song”.
I believe Aretha Franklin is the “notion of song” because she puts her heart into what she does. The tone in her voice is special. When she sings its like she is trying to tell me something. When she sings she is singing from her heart and soul. I don’t believe that anyone can come close to Aretha Franklin when it comes to singing with the passion that she sings with. Aretha puts what she says in your mind, and really gets you to think about what she is saying. When she sings she doesn’t just scramble a bunch of words together. She actually says what she believes in, and maybe might change the way people look at someone.
Aretha Franklin is the “notion of song”, she is the notion of song because her voice represents all the black mothers who were not allowed to show there creativity. The notion of song is an idea of free expression threw singing. The first time the notion of song was really showed in this county was threw slave songs. Not short after though Aretha Franklin came out in the 1900’s with her songs that blew America away. That is why Aretha Franklin represents the notion of song.
Aretha Franklin best presents what Walker calls “the notion of song” because she is a very strong singer. And when she sings, she is very passionate of it. She also sings from her heart, and writes her songs. When she sings she sings from her feelings and all her songs have a meaning. From how she feels, and she expresses it by how she sings. Aretha Franklin best presents “notion of song” because she sings with passion.
I would have to say that Aretha Franklin best discribes “the notion of song” because she sings from the hart. She loves to sing and inspire little kids that want to be able to one day be as great as she is if not better. For others it would inspire them to more and give what they cant and not what they cant give. Her music talks to the soul like as if you were talking to youre best freind. Thats the real music when it makes you feel good on the inside. Those were some reasons I chose to write about how she made me think that she is the best at sings with a pasion.
When it comes to being the “best” at something it all bounces off from were it started. Slaves being those who really define the term soul music, no doubt “best” represents the notion of song. A person can never be better at something than the person who created it, because they will always have that special thing that made everyone want to try to do it also. The songs the slaves sang were real, they came from the heart, and no one ever can truly say they have the passion that the slaves had when they sang. The slaves and there songs best represent the true notion of song, being the fact that they basically created every genre of music. Not only the words but also the way they felt about what they were singing made it so passionate, proving that the slave not only created the genre soul music, but also best represent the true notion of song
I believe that Aretha Franklin best showed the notion of song. I say this because she has more feeling behind it the other music these days do. Take for instance Rihanna. Don’t get me wrong she’s a good singer but you cant feel the same as when Franklin sang. Franklin has soul and voice. Rihanna has voice and looks. Looks go a long way but soul gets you farther. Also theirs this happy feeling in a lot of Franklins work. Makes me want to dance and I hate dancing.
I think that Aretha Franklin is a good representative of the “notion of song” through her song “respect”. The song not only shows that women can sing and keep the “notion of song” for women alive and she shows you her soul for a breif second.
When Aretha Franklin sings you can feel in her voice the pain of all the mothers who were not able to express their creativity. Aretha Franklin best represents the “notion of song”. For years slave women were denied their freedom to express themselves. In order to make up for all of those denied freedom, Aretha Franklin puts her heart and soul into every song she sings and every time she does its just as great as the first. People have tried to out sing her but no one has ever come close and no one ever will. Her songs do not have the same meanings to the other people that sing them as they do to Aretha. Also her voice is one of the purest voices people have ever heard which makes her an even better icon of the “notion of song”.
Aretha Franklin best represents what Alice Walker calls “the Notion of Song”. It’s not her lyrics that illustrate the notion of the song, but the passion in her voice. As I listened to her song, “Don’t Play That Song for me”, I didn’t listen to the lyrics at all. I paid attention to the attitude in her voice. She sings with a passion and desire for freedom that I don’t believe any one else could pull off. I don’t think I could see Miley Cyrus, Mariah Carey, or any other popular modern pop star sing this song. Through her voice, she’s literally shouting “look at me, I’m an independent woman, expressing myself through something I love!” Yeah, I know that’s corny, but that’s basically what she’s doing.
Aretha Franklin is more soulful than these singers today because She started out singing in church she sung for god, not money. What I mean by that is most these girls are trying to get that one big hit, so they can get that pay day. After a few paychecks then they start loving to sing. Beyonce’s dad had picture as pop star as soon as she was born. He didn’t do the Joe Jackson but she wanted her to be a star. Aretha sang for god and she was in cituation where she struggle to get her name out there. That’s the difference !!
Aretha Franklin best describes “notion of song” because she was one of our nations first great singers. She sang about what she felt strongly in, and because of this she was able to be very successful. She grew up in one of the hardest times of our country. She had to fight to be able to sing not only because she was black but also because she was a woman. Showing how truly passionate she was for singing. She is one of the greatest soul singers of today. And is often referred to as the The Queen of Soul. She always sings from her heart. She lets her feelings to the writing and she just sings it out. If that isnt the notion of song I don’t know what is.
Out of everyone Alice Walker mentioned in her essay I think those slaves snatched form their homeland who kept alive the notion of a song best represent it. For them singing didn’t make them any money, their only reward was the ability to express their emotions and what came with that. This is the notion of a song, the expression that comes from releasing that which can find no other way out of you than through song. In the face of oppression they sang, sometimes complete nonsense, but they didn’t sing for their wallets, they sang for singing’s sake. This is why I think these slave women best showed the notion of a song as portrayed by Alice Walker.
When it comes to the “notion of songs” Aretha Franklin best embodies it. In my option she had a better voice than anyone in the music industry today. It sounds like she sings from her heart and means what she sings. I still like the beat and sound of the more modern songs better, but it is all really all just the same. No one comes close to how passionate Aretha is. When she sings you start think you feel what she feels. I think that music from back then has more feeling to it is because the woman went through a lot more than woman now a days. The woman from back then were persecuted against witch gave them that passion to sing.

Out of all the people that Walker mentions in her essay, I feel Nina Simone best represents the meaning of “notion of song”. When she sings her songs she doesn’t just blurt out the words to get the song over and done with. She makes the song interesting by putting her feelings and own personal experiences into the songs. Her personal references come from being a black woman with so much talent back when women, ecspecially black women, didn’t have many rights as individuals. However, she did have a softer side when she sang “Here Comes the Sun”. This means that even though she had difficult times in her life, she knew that life would and did get better. Many singers now do not have the same feeling to their songs as Nina Simone and others who just could experience things and put them together into their songs. Nina can take her songs and give them meaning just by how she not only sings her song, but how she feels the music. This says a lot about her as a singer and a person. However, there are still singers now that, like Nina Simone, can bring their music to life.
Of the singers that Alice Walker mentions in her essay “In Search of our Mother’s Garden” I think Aretha Franklin best represents the “notion of song”. To me Aretha really expresses herself in her music. If you actually listen to the lyrics of the music you will see that it is not just a song, but an expression of emotion about her life and that of others. The soul she puts into her music makes it unique and entertaining. Her music is a source of hope and freedom for many women around the world. It inspires people to be daring and try new things. Listening to nearly any of her songs will make you feel better and more uplifted that day. Her songs are so popular because of how they make people feel. They wouldn’t be popular if people didn’t like to listen to them and they didn’t feel good inside after. This is why I think Aretha Franklin best represents the “notion of song” that Alice Walker mentions in her essay.
In this generation singers who best express themselves through song are the most obvious representatives for Alice Walker’s “notion of song”. Most people say Aretha Franklin is the best choice but I beg to differ. Natasha Bedingfield is the most obvious choice to me because she uses her stand out voice to prove various points or to just have fun. “Pocket full of sunshine” is a good song to help describe how she expresses herself because the song is stating how everyone has their own way of escaping reality thus expressing themselves. Natasha’s “pocket full of sunshine” is singing because you can tell by the way she likes to tell stories through her songs. Theses songs that she creates are light and fun which help people want to find their own “sunshine” to explore and escape reality from. Natasha’s voice is also very unique because not everyone can hit her British high notes or her jazz-like lullabies. Her voice is strong enough to make people want to listen while her lyrics only increase the effect
As of one of the singers that I think best represents the “notion of song”, and their soul is Aretha Franklin. She can sing, in which nobody can sing how she does. She puts so much of her spirit in which it is difficult for someone to sing like her. Her type of music has a meaning to which you want to keep listening to her voice. Now a days some artists don’t express or have a place in their heart where they just sing about stuff that they just wrote in the lyrics in about a couple of minutes. But there is one artist that I know that can keep up with Aretha Franklins level of singing and the person that I know who can is Beyonce Knowles. She has something special I think just mainly because she has the heart to do so. She was consider to be one of the better singer around the world, and so to Aretha Franklin. She has the soul where she can wow the crowd as to Aretha Franklin, so that is what I think the notion of Song is to me.

The notion of song is best defined by those that sing for a purpose. Women in the past have definitely had a rougher life than the women of the present, so I think that they not only sing because they like to, but also to reveal their thoughts. I think that they are trying to send out a message so that we understand what they are or were going through. I beleive that songs with a purpose define the singer theirself. This is what the true notion of song is to me.
Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Erykah Badu, Macy Gray, Jill Scott, Tni Braxton, Tina Turner, Lauryn Hill, Roberta Flack, Mary j. Blige, the Dream girls all have something alike. This thing or feeling that runs within there bodys and soul is what Alice Walker calls the “notion of song”. These women all put forth there soul, when they open there mouth and sound flows. They have some type of message that they want to get out. Crying there soul, mind and body to get what’s needed to be put forth out. I think that the women of the pass and the women now are somewhat alike. The women of today’s life puts only half of there soul, mind, and body into the work and thats what i think separate them.
When you listen to black female singers in the past like Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Toni Braxton, Lauryn Hill, Whitney Houston, and Mary J. Blige you hear the pain they endured when they were younger growing up. You hear what they went through, and you can feel what they went through too. Singers now a days like Beyonce, Rihanna, and Keyshia Cole their voices aren’t as soulful as the singers in the past. You hear pain in some of the artists music now, but when you compare now with then the past singers expressed theirselves better. The “notion of song” represents all female artist, but it better represents the artists in the past.
I believe that the notion of song comes from the not the song itself but the message that the singer is trying to convey. If the singer is trying to tell an audience mindless spews than there is no notion of song. But if the singer is trying to tell the audience the right path to walk than there is a notion of song. Take for example As I Lay Dying this band is a Christian scream-o band that tells the listener thing like not to be ashamed of your faith while some bands just shout and scream about next to nothing. The other thing I think contributes to the notion of song is why the song was written if the song was written just to make money than there is no soul there but if it is written to tell someone something or help a cause than it has a notion of song.

I believe that all of the singer’s walker mentions are the “notion of song”. Women back then and shockingly now, especially African American, go through segregation and discrimination. Black women back then didn’t sing for fame or fortune, they sang because it was a stunning way to express their creativity, which for a long time, was forbidden. It was one of the ways they could show their emotions. They became famous because they made everything sound good, their voice and their lyrics. People loved how they could grasp and feel their pain when they listened to their songs. They accomplished something no one thought they could do.
I believe Aretha Franklin best represents the notion of song. When she sings it comes from her heart, she’s not singing about drugs and gangs. She also has an amazing voice, most artists today have terrible voices that just sound good cause the producer has to change the whole song around. To be a real artist you need to have the passion and determination that Aretha Franklin has.

Aretha Franklin best represents the notion of song. She does because when she sings its real and from the heart. Most singers today have voice alters which makes their voice sound better. Areatha was going threw moore discramtion then singers today. She went threw more pain and suffering back in her days, which showed in her music. she expreesed herself different from other singers. Thats what seprates Aretha from everybody else.
Billie Holiday, she sings with the notion of song. She normally sings from her heart. It’s beautiful. She sounds as though she means every word. It makes me feel like I am there listening to her. She’s got soul. Billie Holiday represents it more than anyone in our days.
I believe that Areatha Franklin best represents “the notion of song” because she is not just singing a song about her life, She is singing from her soul, there is a message and a meaning behind the songs she sings. It is not about heartbreaks, cheating, drugs. It is about how she feels, she sing with a passion and when she sings you feel what she is singing, its like your in her shoes. She also has a beautiful voice which makes you want to listen to more of her songs.
In my opinion Aretha Franklin definitely represents Alice Walker’s “notion of song”. When you listen to her music you can definitely tell there is some kind of feeling behind it. In some of her songs you may hear the pain she have endured while growing up. While in other songs you may hear the joy of falling in love or being happy where she is in her life. Whether that feeling be sadness, happiness, pain, frustration, or any other type of feeling you can tell that it’s there. When I listen to Aretha Franklin, she definitely sings from her heart and soul. Her songs are not just about how somebody may have done wrong by her. Some of her songs are just about respect and love. Her songs are basically about everything.
Aretha Franklin best represents the notion of a song because she has her own style of singing. If you listen to singers that came before her such as Billie Holiday, she doesn’t try to sound like them at all. Aretha has her own unique style and this is what makes her standout from being just another singer to one of the greatest of all time. Back when Aretha sung, they didn’t have as much technology in the studio that make your voice sound sharper or change it completely. This is why singers today sound the same.
I personally think that the slaves best represent “notion of songs”. They sing from their hearts, because through singing thats the only way that they expressed themselfs. Slaves sang from how they really felt. Singers now a days usually sing about a bad breakup or about how they got cheated on. If you hear slaves songs you can feel the pain that they felt, because they expressed it so well and we know what they went through. So to me slaves would be our “notion of songs”.
In my opinion, Aretha Franklin is the best choice in representing the “notion of song”. Aretha sings from her heart and soul it is great passion for her to sing. She expresses all of her emotions in her songs very well. She doesn’t just write stuff for no reason like most artists do today. Aretha’s were straight from the heart. It was hard back then to become a singer. It wasn’t just if you could sing you’re good. She wanted it that bad and she is known as one of the greatest soul artists in history. When she sings, you feel what she is feeling because she expresses her felling so much. She brings lots to the table ad her singing might be a similar problem somebody else has and she might say what she did and helps them. That’s why I think she is the best choice in representing the “notion of song”.
Areatha Franklin best represents “notion of song” because she sings from her heart. Back then women did not have the rights like we do now. When she sings she puts her heart and soul into it. You feel the emtion that she feels when she sings. Its beautiful. Back when women didnt have equal rights you had to fight so hard to be able to do what you wanted to do. She fought for what she wanted and she got what she wanted, she acheived her goal.
Areatha Franklin represents the “notion of song” because of the heart and soul she puts into her music.Women didnt have many rights back then so it was hard to get where she was.She fought and never gave up on her dream. When you listen to her mucis you can feel what she is sayin because it came for the heart. Her music has the kind of orginality that music today needs and the kind of soul that brings you in.She is the greatest soul artist in history.I dont think anyone can compare to her.She brought so much to the table that artist today can’t.She had that natural voice and knew how to use it.
Aretha Franklin is who I would acknowledge as the person that best describes the “notion of song”. Unlike other new and upcoming artists in our time, Aretha has actual talent. Though she didn’t make as much money as the new artist do now a days, I still feel that she is the best of and talented singer out there. She expresses true feeling in the songs that she sings, and shows you what she’s feeling. To me she represents a well-rounded singer that has been through many troubles in her life. She pushes through it all to become as talented as she is today. When you think of some of the best singers in the world, you have to name Aretha Franklin as one of them. All her songs have some truthful meaning behind it, meaning that actually matters. I hate hearing all this gibberish on the rap stations, it makes no sense. Aretha’s is what brings the reality of things to our own ears.
