Chapter 7 was when Janie realized that her marrage was starting to go down hill. Jodi treated her nice at first but now all he does is a complain. Make Janie feel old and not letting her be herself. Jodi got what he deserved. When he was calling out Janie in the store she turned around and insulted him back. He which then hit her in the face and made her leave the store. Which I thought was totally not called for. Men should not hit women. Why is Jodi so worried about calling Janie out?

I think shane swinburnson is wrong about janie poisining jody. She could never get the courage to do such a thing. I mean she loved him to an extent. Even though she was angry with him she could never hurt him.

Chapter 9
All the people in town think that Janie seems sad about the death of Jody. Honestly I think that she feels free and uplifted at the fact that she can become herself again. She was never able to be herself around Jody. I just feel that she became happier.

I agree with Daniel. Coming from experience, I think that being in a controlling relationship is horrible. It is not good for your self-esteem to be controlled and told what to do every day. I do believe that Janie was happy when Jody died because it meant that she got her freedom back. Janie was finally able to live her life her way again and I think that the thought of being capable of living her life and having her freedom back was why Janie was happy when Jody departed.

In this chapter, Jody is getting sick, and all the people in the town think that Janie is responsible for it. Jody dies later from his kidney’s. However, after Jody dies, Janie acts like she is sad when she’s in town, except she doesn’t feel sadness, rather she feels free instead.

Come on you guys, why would Janie poison Joe? Remember what Mr. K said Janie only wanted Joe for his material things not for him (btw that’s y she went to Tea cake so quick after Joe’s death). Janie didn’t like Joe but she dealt with him just because she had no choice but when he died Janie regained her hair and her freedom.

Honestly I didn’t like the ending to Their Were Watching God because Janie had finally found love and she lost it when she was truly happy. Tea cake had shown and experienced a lot of things with Janie when he was alive which is also why I don’t like the fact that he died. Yes Tea cake did die from trying to save Janie from a rabid dog but that’s hardly an ending for someone like him. I was rooting so hard for Janie to stay happy and have a fairytale ending but instead Hurston had Tea cake killed by Janie which only darkened the mood of the story. The ending was sort of weak too because I wanted to know and understand what happened to Janie after Tea cakes death. Still the book was good and big props to Hurston for a great book.

I disagree with Austin's comment about Janie killing Jody. It's true that she wanted to get revenge on him, but when he first became mayor, Janie was practically begging Joe to be like a normal familly. Like Joe G said, she doesn't seem like the type to kill him, because she ran away just to be with him. Although she has gain freedom, since every one suspects she killed him she has loss respect, and I doubt that anyone would want to lose there respect, especially Janie who was not liked in her home town. That's why I disagree when Austin says that Janie killed Jody.

I don't think that Janie poisoned Joe. It was clear that she was sick of Joe making fun of her and embarassing her in the shop, but I don't think that she would kill him over it. There could easily be a logical explanation as to why he died. Doctors just probably haven't found it because back then, cures were hard to find. That's why I don't think Janie killed him.
