"Do you love me?"(Patchett 240).

This is a phrase frequently said by Lucy throughout the novel to Ann. I believe that it shows a lot about Lucy's feelings and insecurities about her face. Throughout the novel, Lucy is constantly asking Ann if she loves her. I think that this is because Lucy believes she is too ugly to have anybody love her, and has a hard time accepting that fact that Ann does. Therefore she constantly questions the truth behind the love Ann claims she has for her. I think that Lucy believes that because men don't find her physically attractive, nobody can ever be capable of loving her. It's as if she is confusing feelings of sexual attraction with the kind of love good friends have for one another. That is why I picked this quote.

“It was like imperial Rome, like the Christians and lions, violent, visceral, exciting, crazy” (Bissinger 274).

This quote really gives an image to the reader of how each player felt when they were on the field. No one really understands how it feels to be on that field, unless you’re in that position. It really helps the reader understand the players, and the book as a whole when each play and game is described. If the reader can’t understand football and how much playing means to the players, they won’t really be able to understand the book at all since from then on is when the majority of the book is about football. This at the same time lets the reader understand the other side, those who watch them play and how much each football game means to the town. Knowing the emotion behind how much football means to the town makes the book a much better read.

"After spending so much of her youth trying to turn people's attention away from her face, she now pulled the light directly onto her jaw and childhood, her humiliation"(Patchett 106).

This quote is about Lucy's book 'Autobiography of a Face'(I don't know how to italicize). I believe this quote shows that even though we try to hide our flaws and problems, it feels better to just accept yourself as you are. The autobiography "Fortunate Son" also shows this to be true. In this novel, the main character and author has his legs blown off in Vietnam and as a result suffers for the rest of his life: both physically and mentally. The novel he wrote was an attempt to put Vietnam and what happened to him behind him and move on in his life. That is why I picked this quote.

"I'm not like those other people, I'm not an addict"( Patchett 249).

I decided to use this quote because I believe that it shows one of Lucy's coping methods, which is trying to compensate for her bad qualities. We see throughout most of the novel that Lucy tries to cope for her face by being intellectual, or "better" than others. She believes that though she may not be physically pretty, she is smarter than those who would turn her down because of her face and ultimately too good for them anyways. This causes Lucy to believe that because she is smarter than others, and "better" she can't be an addict. That is why I picked this quote.

"Without writing, Lucy was just another patient in the surgical ward, waiting for her tissue expander to fill with the saline and stretch out her skin"(62 Patchett).

I picked this quote because i believe that it shows how people can use something that they have to compensate for something they don't have or are lacking in. We see Lucy does this with her writing. In this case Lucy uses her writing as an outlet and to keep her mind off of the pain she is enduring. I think that it is important for us to have something that can get us through hard times or make us feel better about ourselves. That is why I picked this quote.

"The world is saved through deeds, not prayer, because what is prayer but a kind of worry"( Patchett 43).

I find this quote to be interesting because I agree with the message behind it. I think that people today too often wait for problems to solve themeselves or for them to be solved by others. Their hearts are in the right place, but they just don't want to make the effort to do something. You can look at situations that are currently happening and see the truth in this statement, such as Darfur. People are always saying "Hey somebody should do something", and often don't look to themselves as that someone. To be honest, I am just as guilty of this as anybody else is. That is why I picked this quote.

“The value of high school football was deeply entrenched. It was the way the community had chosen to express itself. The value of high school English was not entrenched. It did not pack the stands with twenty thousand people on a Friday night; it did not evoke any particular feelings of pride one way or another. No one dreamed of being able to write a superb critical analysis of Joyce’s Finnegan’s Wake from the age of four on” (Bissinger 147) .

This quote shows how every kid clearly loves high school football and their dreams of one day being able to play for Permian. The bigger issue though is the town’s lack of desire for an education that will take you far. Just because football is highly ranked in the importance of life for those who live in this town, doesn’t mean students should be able to blow off school work and their education. They should realize that football won’t mean this much to them forever, and when it’s gone they will get nowhere in life without a proper education, and it will be too late to change anything. If I were a parent I would not want my child to go through a school that didn’t take getting an education, and having a good work ethic seriously. Although living the high school life, and being involved and supportive of the football team is an amazing experience, there are other places that can provide both education and fun.

“If we prepared our kids academically as we prepared them for winning the state championship, there is no telling where we would be now” (Bissinger 134).

This is something that happens in so many schools, especially colleges. Teachers give student athletes a break on their work and take any excuses from them. Throughout the book, it’s hinted many times how the school system is failing at Permian, and this is a prime example. In my belief, it’s very wrong to give athletes special treatment, no matter how big of a star they are. People should always have a backup plan if something doesn’t workout, like college football because of injury of other circumstances. A proper education is necessary in everyday life, because no matter how hard most high school athlete’s work, their journey usually ends when they leave high school. Enjoying a sport and letting a sport take over your entire high school career are two completely different things, and remembering that there are other goals out there to reach are very important things to keep in mind.

“They would still be gladiators, the ones who were envied by everyone else, the ones who knew about the best parties and got the best girls and laughed the loudest and strutted so proudly through the halls of school as if it was their own wonderful, private kingdom” (Bissinger 111).

This quote shows how everyone at school views the typical jock. They always act like they own everything, and it just makes others feel bad in some cases that they cant be like them or on the football team. So many players get exceptions from teachers and are treated much higher than those who are just normal students, and in my opinion it’s very annoying. Often those who are hidden behind the football players are great people with amazing talents who get ignored.

"Wasn't it more important to live with a man, a man who was certain to wake up one day and be happy because I was there with all my good intentions sleeping beside him? Wasn't that more valuable than staying with a friend who made me laugh, who made me think about everything, but was, in the end, just a girl? I shouldn't have had to choose between them"(45)

I don't believe Ann should have chosen her boyfriend over a good friend. When I read this passage I was pretty ticked, because it goes against my morals, which is friends before boyfriends. Especially in Lucy's condition, I feel like she should have stayed with he pal, and not meet up and live with some guy who could easily break her heart. She even describes all the goods things Lucy has done for her. Though I agree when she says she shouldn't have to choose between the two of them, its better for all involved if she didn't.
