Yes, i do believe that the American Dream is an illusion. The American dream is something that 90% of people will never be able to achieve, that is why it is called a “dream”. An illusion is something that decieves you by producing a false or misleading impression of reality. Reality is most definitely not the American dream. Reality is where you have to work for everything you get and all the money you have. To get a lot of money you have to work even harder. You can’t just sit on your butt and expect money to fall in your lap. The American dream is that you will get rich by doing apsolutely nothing and have anything you want. that will never happen, and even if you do become rich you will never be perfectly happy because money does not buy you happiness. You need love, and friends and something to keep you busy and wanting to get up in the morning, other than money. Maybe if you work hard for almost your whole life one day you will have the dream of being rich, but you will always have to put your time and hard work into it. The American dream is only a dream, and an illusion.

No, I don’t think that the American dream is an illusion because people make it big all the time. Big means, making the American dream. I have seen sports players start from completely nothing and having to practice with things that you never thought you could use. To becoming the most paid player in the world. They work hard day in and out and give it their best. All these people that hit it big have many things in common they all worked hard. The American dream is going from nothing to something. It doesn’t have to be a sports player it could be anyone. CEO’s for example have to face many difficult times. When their business struggles for a bit they can’t worry, they have to work harder. Those are the ones that make the difference and make the dream. They start off with no money, and now make it big. I look at the American dream as a dream. If you work hard enough, you can reach that dream, they key is to work hard.

I don’t think that the American Dream is an illusion. I believe that everyone has a different definition of the American Dream; some people may consider it to be owning designer clothes and a mansion while others may view it as having a steady job, and a loving family. To me, living the American Dream means that you have accomplished the goals you’ve set for yourself, and are satisfied with your life. I don’t think the American Dream is an illusion because so many people are living a life that they wouldn’t change for anything.

The American dream is just an illusion because no matter how hard you work in your life you won’t become rich and be happy. The American dream is to be rich and happy and that is impossible. It is impossible because you might be able to make your self rich through hard work but I doubt that you would be happy because you would have to work all the time to raise yourself up to that level that you would have no time for yourself and your family. The other way is that you are happy but not rich. Most people are happy with their lives and they realize that the American dream is just an illusion and they don’t try to become rich they spend more time with their families and have fun with their lives. So the American dream is an illusion because it is impossible to be rich and happy at the same time.

What really is the American Dream? Who can we really count on to define it? What you think of as the American Dream and what I think of as the American dream may be too different things. How we can we just go off of what one person says. Who’s to say that just because I have a husband two kids a chocolate lab and a white picket fence that I’m living the American Dream? The American Dream can be defined by number of things it’s how your living and how you look at life is how people determine which is the American dream or not. When Fitzgerald says “we should look at the world threw a single window” I think he means that we should all just look at life the same way. If everybody looked at life the same way then how would we determine who was right from wrong, there wouldn’t be any difference and no change whatsoever. From reading this book I have formed an opinion that he is trying to make us see things from different points of views the American dream is an illusion because if you research it there are many definitions for it. Many people have defined it in ways that adapt to there way of living. I say I’m living the American dream because I’m happy in my life and I do the things that I want. I don’t think you should change your way of living to be apart of the “American Dream” if everybody did that I wouldn’t be writing this opportunity to explain why I think that the American Dream is and illusion.

The American Dream is a image. I don’t believe the American dream is a illusion. To some people it is but not to all people. Yes people start out with very little money and make millions. It just takes effort. For other people it is a illusion because no people don’t try and if they start out with nothing and don’t think they can make it ten it is a illusion. If you are living the American dream you could not be happy or something could be going wrong. You could be impersonating or just playing a role in the dream. If you have money and everything is going right then you are living the American dream. There are people doing it and not pretending. For example some sports players. Like someone else said what is the American dream. My American dream is to have a wife with only one kid. I would like to have a house but nothing special I mean if it happens it happens but its fine. Another part of my dream is to accomplish all of my goals. Then I will live my American Dream.

Yes I do think that the American dream is an illusion. The American dream is not really the “American” dream because each person has their own interpretation of the American dream, one person may believe that it is obtaining large amounts of money, the amount of things that you posses, or just finding the one person that you will spend the rest of your life with and even then the odds of theses thing happening is very thin. Since the “American” dream is usually something that people dream that is the impossible dream to ever come true no matter how hard you try, and this is only for those people who dare to believe the dreams, or should I say Lies, that they have been taught all their lives; “you could be president”, “you could be an astronaught”, “you could become rich and famous”. These things are all lies that people have created illusions based on, because none of these will ever come true. That is why the “American” dream is an illusion.

i believe that the american dream is an illusion because if it was achieveable to easily the world wouldn’t work there is infinite wants and if everyonr had what they wanted then there would be no jobs or anything to do. the american dream is achieveable but not all that want it can have it, anyone that isn’t born rich will work there hole life to get the dream but it is always detured. so unless you are celeb offspring you are out of luck with that whole american dream thing. but the american dream isnt the only one you can be well off and have a good job. thats my american dream to have a well paying job and buy things that i want. just the reasonable things not the stupid things famous people buy now. just a few luxreries.

Tiara Long wrote @ April 13th, 2008 at 1:08 pm

What’s exactly the “American Dream”? I think that everybody’s definiton of the American Dream is different. Everybody’s vision of the American dream is to be successful, point blank. People make themselves out to be what their not and thats when it becomes an illusion. Sometimes i think that the American Dream is impossible. It’s a fantasy. Let’s face it majority of people who weren’t born into money will NEVER have the dream. Most go to school and then spend the rest of their life working. The only time you get to sit back and relax is when you retire. However; if yu define the American Dream as being happy i don’t think that’s an illusion. That’s acheiveable and we can all have that even if it’s once in life.

Brittany Brown wrote @ April 13th, 2008 at 1:55 pm

The American dream is definitely an illusion. More than half the people in the world won’t even make it close to the American Dream because it’s not real. It’s a dream that you hope for. You hope to be successful and you hope to be rich. You can hope all you want to but it still is going to be a dream. There is a saying that once you make it all your problems go away. You’re going to have problems to the day you die regardless if you want them or not. They’re just there. When people make it to where they want to be they pretend to act like everything is fine. They put on an image of what they want people to see. They want people to see how many cars they have or how big their houses are. But the fact is they probably can’t even afford it. The dream says through hard work and effort anybody can achieve success. And afterwards everybody can be rich, happy and famous. But, reality is it is still a dream.

An illusion is something that people believe is a not real, for some it is a fantasy. In The Great Gatsby, James Gats a.k.a. “Gatsby” is living a fake life. He worked so hard to achieve his American dream, and was missing one thing-Daisy.By asking if Gatsby an image or illusion, Fitzgerald is asking us if the American dream is an illusion. The answer to this question is yes. The American dream is perceived differently by certain people, for some the dream can be a reality but for others it is way to far fetched. Everyone has different outlooks on the American dream; some see it as a way to go from rags to riches. There are many different opinions on what it is exactly, I believe it is reaching a high level of success, and living a happy life. Usually when I hear about the American Dream people talk about having a nice size family, a big house, a high paying job, and living out the life they wanted as a child. Some people not everyone achieves that goal they have but until they do its just an illusion.

I think the American dream is not an illusion. There are lots of stars that are living the dream right now. There are also many more people that are going to live the dream. When you are living the american dream nothing is bad for you and you are happy all the time. That dream is possible but not many people can say that they have reached it. My american dream is having a loving family and haveing a sucessful job to support my family.

I think that the American Dream is an illusion, because when we were all little kids we use to smile when our parents would tell us that we could be anything we want and be rich and famous. Well now there telling us that no one cna be rich and blah blah blah. They are telling us that you can only be born into being rich. I personally don’t believe it, i think that if you want to be something do it! yes, it may take a little bit of time but the harder you work the higher chance your dream will come true!

I think that the American Dream is not an illusion. I feel an illusion is something a person wants to see but in reality it is not there. The American Dream is possible for everyone who is willing to work hard for it. I think that it just takes one good break and anything could happen. When a person heads for a dream but doesn’t reach it, that doesn’t mean that there is no American Dream. Maybe that person needs to adjust the focus of the dream.

   joebalkevtich wrote @ April 17th, 2008 at 6:35 am

I think that the American dream is not an allusion because the people who work for there dream they some how accomplish it. I also think that when you don’t think you can do things you are more than likely not going to do it because you would be doubting your self. So that is why I think that the American dream is not an illusion.

I truly believ the American Dream is an allusion. Peope all over the world try to reach the American dream. Rarley do people ever find it. The American Dream I think is anpicture painted by the government or society to make everyone think they’re going to have this perfect family. Personally I dont want the American dream…..a big house, a whit picket fence, a husband and wife, two kids, and a dog. I hate it It really dosent matter where I live as long as it dosent look raged and can fit me and my family. SO people need to stop trying to acheive a goal that 90% of them will not reach.

No, I do not believe that the American dream is an illusion. The American dream represents the success that most of Americans and others want in their life. Usually Americans want to have a big house with a big back yard, their dream job, usually married with one or more children some kind of specific animal whether it be a cat, dog, monkey, or a bird. The American dream is a material contest. The more you have the better your life is, the kind of car you drive compared to the kind of car your neighbor drives, Your child’s grades compared to your sister or brothers children’s grades , whether or not you have to pay a tutor to help your child. Everything, every little bit breaks down into having to be the best. The American dream to me means wanting to do the best want, to have the best. I can see how much nicer a foreign sport car is compared to a ford jeep is. I can see the different value ranges between two houses. So no, I do not believe that the American dream is an illusion.

I think the american dream is not an illusion. If you work hard in life then you reach that dream but if you dont you cant reach it. The american dream is just for you and it can be anything like getting a job or having a great family. There is no illusion to the american dream.

No, I don’t believe that the American Dream is an illusion because people can achive their goals if they wanted to. I think that if you work extra hard at it then you can make the American Dream big. Though their are times were it can be an illusion but if it is an illusion then you can make it not an illusion. The more work you put into it the better your life could be. Their are many people out their that have found the American Dream and their are some who haven’t quite found it yet.

Yes, I do think the American Dream is and illusion. The reason why I say this is because you can never be happy with what you want. And no matter how hard you try for it, it won’t make you feel happy about it. If your dream is to live happy and rich, you will be happy but you won’t feel the way you want it to be. Being rich isn’t everything; it just means that you have money. A different way is being happy without being rich. I think being rich can cause problems because the more you make, is going to make you think that you can spend a lot more than you usually do. So I think it’s not possible because you can’t get everything that you wish you want.

Olivia Mikkelson wrote @ May 4th, 2008 at 3:16 pm

I believe that the American Dream is an allusion because when you dream something then you can work hard to make that dream come true. There are sports players that have dreams of winning and they work really hard everyday to make their dreams come true. It doesn’t matter how big your dream is, you can still make it true. I think that everyone try everyday to make the American Dream come true. In the end I think that everyone can make the American Dream true as long as they try hard for it.

I believe that the American dream is not an illusion, to me it means doing what you have always dreamed of doing, whether its from getting a dream car, wife, job any of those in my mind is achieving the American dream. Many people start out with completely nothing or somewhere close and bring themselves all the way to the top for example any professional athlete you can think of most of them are kids who had nothing and just worked at it and became who they are today. I have heard people say that they are living the American dream when they are rich I think that you can never be rich and happy at the same time is achieving the American. This continues to let me think that the American dream is NOT an illusion at all.
