Billy’s Balloon

After reading the interview with Don Hertzfeldt in The Believer magazine I went to YouTube to find the short Billy’s Balloon.A couple other people saw it and it went “viral” among my students. I don’t advocate all of his work but overall he’s pretty amazing. The end of Rejected where the animations break down and are sucked into the hole in the paper is really brilliant. It reminds me of the “Duck Amuck” cartoon where Bugs Bunny is tormenting Daffy Duck by drawing different things onto the page where Daffy “lives.” That bit of self referential humor, where the characters are both within and outside of their own world fascinates me.
