Happiness?

The Geography of Bliss is about wandering all over the world trying to find the happiest place and people. This flies in the face of the idea that true happiness is a state of mind that lies within and searching for it is a fool’s errand.

I really enjoyed this book since happiness is a quality that tends to elude me. I’m not unhappy-I know when I feel content (occasuionally) or healthy ( rarely-less and less as I get older…all of that talk about 40 being the new 20 is shit.) or at ease (again almost never) but what I really feel is lucky and grateful. And what I feel lucky and grateful for are the people I’m lucky enough to know.

The other funny book is The Foreskin’s Lament. I laughed out loud and nearly cried more times than I can remember in the first 50 or so pages. I’m not an orthodox Jew and wasn’t raised in a violent family but the author captures that strange ambivolent relationship I’ve always had with authority figures. I distrust authority and generally resent anyone who has it-teachers, bosses, parents, god, but now that I’m an authority myself I find myself divided. Should I distrust myself? I find it hard to believe that I’m in a position of authority at all. I wonder how I’m doing?
